Description
Having completed colonization efforts on a class M planet, a fleet of Starfleet vessels is leaving the system, to return to the nearest starbase. Not any particular reason why I chose these ships, just that they're some of my more favorite classes. And well, you do need an escort like a Defiant class in any case.
If anyone's wondering; the registry number on the Galaxy class belongs to the U.S.S. Venture which made appearances in a few of DS9's Dominion battle episodes, but as far as I know is still in service. So, why not?
COMPOSITION: Starfield was rendered, the remaining background elements were composited/digitally painted from scratch in Photoshop by me. The setup of the ships with lighting rig and subsequent render was done in Lightwave. I've also retextured Prologic9's Galaxy class in the process for more details. The remaining post work was done in PS.
MESHES: Galaxy class by Prologic9 (retextured my me), Defiant class by Skye Dodds, Danube class Runabouts by Thomas Slanitz & Raven class by Nick Bacon (LW conversion by Infinityloop).

Well-done! Love the Galaxy-class textures and planet textures, and the dust cloud background. The lighting's just right.

Personally this would be a very plausiable senario - very well done!!
And I think this reminds you of the scene(ish) of DS9 "The Jem'Hadar"
Well executed

Well, remotely perhaps, though in this case this is faaar from any war (or its beginnings).
Thank you!

Whoa!! This is absolutely gorgeous! I love your use of lighting, and I love the composition, implying the size and importance of the Galaxy class.

Thank you very much. And yes, well, the Galaxy class (being in my opinion the most graceful design of them all) certainly is important! Also, in space... scale is everything!

I love the Galaxy class, myself. It has few, if any, bad angles, and when it's angled upward with that huge saucer pointing up, it really looks regal and elegant, and very fitting of the class name. Andy Probert did a fantastic job designing her.

Yes he did. If it wasn't too cheesy (and if 'Galaxy' wasn't more fitting), they could've just as well named it 'Majestic' class. Would've also been a nice pun on the (supposed) Majestic 12 committee. I think now there is some Trek fan RPG that has such a class name, but I'm not really concerned with non-canon stuff. So...

Indeed. Galaxy is really much more fitting. It speaks of not only the mission of the Federation, but the size of the ship. The Sovereign may be a hundred meters longer, but there's none that can match the Galaxy for sheer volume short of the star bases. Plus, if you've ever looked at pictures of galaxies, it's clear that something that invokes as much majesty and power as the shape of the Galaxy class deserves that name.

Yup, absolutely. It's such a shame that we never got to see the more impressive areas of the ship in the show, like that huge windowed observation deck that rounds the saucer, or the more impressive labs. I think that was the original idea for "Star Trek: Online" as well, that you could actually explore the entire Galaxy class vessel. Shame they axed it.

I KNOW! I was really ticked when I heard that it had gone from "You're part of a crew on a single starship" to "Each person is in command of his own ship". I was really looking forward to not only exploring every inch of the ship and seeing how it compared to the blueprints, but being a part of something much larger than myself. Gotta please the RPGer crowd, though; everyone's gotta have their own 'mount'.
Regarding that observation deck, I really wish they had paid more attention to Andy Probert's design for that. Ten Forward is actually half as tall as it should be, or rather the windows are. Also, it would have been cool to see Picard give Vash a tour of that area as Probert described it. It's supposed to contain no lights, making it easy to see the stars. This by extension makes it a perfect snogging area.
I also would have liked to see more labs. At least I was rewarded by Gates Macfadden's attention to detail. She really worked overtime to make sure all the medical stuff was accurate, which, as the brother of an RN, I appreciate.

Yeah. I was very disappointed when they changed the STO concept. One reason why I haven't bothered playing it. It's too mainstream.
As for the show, well, I guess they had time and money restraints. Especially considering that they also had to shoot the external sequences back in the day. CGI has made things much easier and less time consuming. I guess overall it wasn't warranted to build a huge set if you're only going to see parts of it in a frame occasionally, or only once. Ten Forward was seen more often, but again, not a panorama view.
Also a lot of sets were reused. If you look at the first seasons, the battle bridge was used as the bridge for the Stargazer and the court room in 'Measure of a Man'. The Observation Lounge was sickbay etc. etc. It's a shame, but money always makes the choices for you.

Wow thx guys, didn't know that about Ten Forward...would've been cool to see a vaulted loft style Ten Forward with massive star gazing windows! Budgets, ah but it was amazing TNG was made at all considering Trek's incredible tv hiatus. The sets, fx, acting and amount of prop creation, there was nothing on TV then that rivaled it.
*sigh* STO now there was a cool idea butchered by basic RPG needs, why were all the ships interiors huge and generic? Away team exploration coolness was minimized for repetitive space combat. Really the wrong development house got a hold of it, run by Atari, who seem focused on a quick return on investment than a dedicated effort to yield critical attention and replay value. (sometimes I wonder if an innovative hardcore team like Bungie ever worked on a Star Trek game, such games wouldn't have such a lackluster rep).

That's why I usually stick with older games. At least there was a story and even replay value, even if the look is by no means current anymore. Who cares?
Plus there are plenty of 'interactive' movie type softwares from back in the day. Like the "Interactive Technical Manual", "Capain's Chair", the "Encyclopedia", "Star Trek Klingon", "Star Trek Borg" etc. -- if you don't know any of those titles, you might wanna do a search; seriously worth it. I've even got a Virtual Machine with Win98 running, so that I can occasionally dive into these pieces of digital brilliance.

Time and money constraints are a given, but you'd at least think they would respect Probert's design. That's the reason the rec-deck set in TMP doesn't fit in the saucer section as-is: the set designer usually has his own ideas about the design of the set, and doesn't want the concept artists intruding on his territory.
The battle bridge was also used as the bridge of the Defiant, if memory serves.

overseer In reply to MillenniumFalsehood [2012-09-26 16:18:02 +0000 UTC]
Well, I guess that's how it goes unfortunately. I also don't think it's the set designers, directors etc., it's mostly the guys in accounts (and who they get their directives from).
And the battle bridge may have been used for the basic layout of the Defiant bridge. I actually don't remember for sure either. It's certainly possible.

Yeah, I think I got it mixed up. I checked Ex-Astris, and it was the Refit Bridge which was used for the D's battle bridge.

Just a question: you always upload your works in small resolution, although it is visible you've resized them. Are there hi-res versions available somewhere?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
overseer In reply to thefirstfleet [2012-09-25 17:22:24 +0000 UTC]
Nope I generally don't make them available online. If anyone asks me for a higher resolution and I know them, no problem, but I usually tell people that the best way to prevent any kind of art theft is to not provide the high resolutions. If I provide high res it's usually as a wallpaper pack of some kind. After all dA allows to select a resolution when you upload. Call it personal choice... I keep it big enough to see enough details without having to scroll around.

Was Defiant class runabout meant as a listing w/o the commas included? Because the Defiant class is actually very different from the runabout classes.
