You are right, these are big plants: they can grow up to 3 meters in height and the flower is about 30 cm long.

This plant belongs to the ginger family but it's ornamental only, not used for cooking
Big plants, grow to about 3 meters high. Can be found in many tropical gardens.
This one I found in the very beautiful garden of one of the resorts on Malapascua Island - see last journal entry.
