The encounter of the last campaign that scared our fighters the most was a cavalry charge of duergar dwarves using hide armor and stone hammers riding huge-sized rust monsters.... Nobody wanted to risk their precious armor & weaponry!

for 25 gold you can carry a large wooden shield and a wooden club... but if it hits you, your metal armor is still sadly in danger, unless you remove it very fast somehow

So true. My players would stand and face a dragon, but would run from run from one of these otherwise harmless beasties.
