Description Close up of my Black-bellied Delta California Kingsnake's, Black Jack, face. I love his eyes and Eclipse was one of the names for him that I was mulling over when I got him b/c his eyes look like a solar eclipse. I absolutely LOVE this snake!

I can see why, he's so pwetty! >w<

I miss my snake. I had a little ribbon snake named Sayuri. I thought snakes liked moist environments, cause she liked being in her pool, so I use to mist up her tank for her. Turns out they don't like that, and she ended up getting a respiratory infection and dying

Sorry to tell you a depressing story, it's just this guy reminded me of her. She was so sweet <3

Oh sorry you lost your ribbon snake. Snakes, whether they are a species that likes humidity or not, will soak themselves for different reasons. Most will do so prior to shedding. Others do it b/c they do need higher humidity or they are too hot. Some do it to make defecating easier. But they will also do it if they have mites. Especially if a snake is always hanging out in their dish and they aren't a species that is normally that fond of water. My first snake, when I was 6 yrs old, was a garter snake, a species very similar to a ribbon. He had mites and used to soak himself all of the time. But this was a time when there was no internet and very little info on the proper care of pet snakes. Though my mom and I tried to save him by soaking him in a chemical solution that had mite meds in it he was so infested and so anemic from loosing so much blood that he didn't make it. Don't beat yourself up over what happened. You didn't know and you thought you were doing the right thing. But if you ever want another snake or other reptile/amphibian don't be afraid to ask me any questions you may have. I wasn't born knowing what I do and it took yrs of hands on experience to get to were I am at now with my knowledge of them. And I am always happy to help if and when I can.

Thanks. I don't think she had mites or was too hot, but she would soak a lot. She'd also burrow underneath her pool too. I thought it was just a snake thing to soak. That's also where'd I put her feeder fish or worms (she hated crickets or slugs. I guess she liked her food wet and slimey. She was picky that way) so maybe she was waiting for food? I dunno.
I've kinda been wanting another snake. But right now I have a cockatiel that needs my attention (and also needs me to clean his cage), so maybe when I can juggle more than one caged animal (I let my bird out of course, I just mean animals excluding cats and dogs that can feed and take care of themselves for the most part).

You have to be really careful with feeder fish. They are LOADED with internal parasites. Garters I've had in the past I also have fed feeder fish too but that was many yrs ago before the internet and before most keepers of them knew better. The albino checkered garter I have now only eats mice. It took me three months of persistent and careful training to get him to eat mice b/c before that he was so tiny and only would eat guppies. But I was able to sneak in a pinky twice while he was eating a guppy and once he got the taste for them that is all he's been eating. It could very well be that your snake perished from internal parasites from eating fish too. So that could explain why she soaked like that.
Cockatiels are truly cute birds. I had one for a few yrs and have also had finches, canaries, budgies and love birds. I don't have any birds right now and I do really miss them. Maybe down the line I'll get into them again.

OMG, I never knew feeder fish could be loaded with parasites!! D:
I was doing everything wrong, wasn't I? ;~;
Were worms bad too? (ones you'd find when it rains heavily)
I can't believe how much I didn't know. I feel like an idiot for getting a snake when I knew nearly nothing. I thought it was a lot simpler than it is...
When I found her the morning she died, I picked her up to see if she was okay. Water dripped from her mouth. Could that still have been parasites?

Cockatiels are cute. I feel bad for not spending a lot of time with mine, but he poops everywhere and chews on my technologies.
The poop part doesn't bug me, but it bugs the crap (ha) out of my brother. He also complains about the down feathers and dust in the air after my bird fluffs or flies around.

Don't beat yourself up over it hun. Things happen. Even I have lost animals due to the not knowing...especially since in my early yrs there was no internet and so little info on their proper care. But even today people do make mistakes in the best intention. It's not like you did anything to purposely hurt the snake. As for the water coming out of her mouth. That sounds like she aspirated water into her lungs or vomited it up right before she died. It could be a sign that she had a lung compromise due to parasites too. It's hard to say without her having a full exam of her dead body. It could also be a sign of a heart or lung condition. She may have been sick for a long time, could have even been an issue she was born with and she finally became too weak or sick to survive it. Again don't trouble yourself so much with this. Take it as a learn experience and if you get another snake at least this time you'll be more aware.
Poop and all is part of having any animal. It's your bird and if your brother doesn't like it it's not really any of his say when you take him out.LOL

I use to fill my tub with a little bit of water and let her swim in it. She started doing this weird yawning, which I looked up to find it might be a sign of respiratory infection. I thought It was the chlorine in the water, so I stopped letting her swim in the bath.
I feel bad, cause she was super cute. She'd let me rub the underside of her chin and she'd slide up the sleeve of my shirt for warms. The only thing was if she pooped on me. Unlike bird poop, hers soaked in and smelled absolutely awful. So that combined with when I reached in to pick her up, she'd think I was feeding her and take a snap at my finger are the reasons why I didn't hold her as often near the end. I miss how she felt when she wrapped around my arm <3
I'd like another snake, but I gotta take care of my bird too.
I don't think he knows how to take a bath properly. I always see wild birds squat in the water and shake their feathers and wings. My bird just walks around in it, dunks his face in, then flings the water everywhere. I feel if he could bathe properly, she wouldn't be so dusty. :/

Snakes in general will occasional yawn but if you where noticing it a lot then it's a big possibility that it's a sign of some kind of respiratory or digestive issue...from an infection to internal parasites. And yeah snake poo can be pretty fowl. I've been pooed on quite a bit myself and it still makes me gag a bit. Water turtle poo though is even worse in my opinion...it smells like sewer water! And some snakes can be super food aggressive even if you don't have their food with you. Some can also be tank defensive in that they get all pissy when they are still in their tank/tub but once they are taken out they are fine.
Awe and your poor bird. It could be he never got to see how another birds bathed so he may not really know how to do it. Birds are very smart and a lot of what they do they learn from others of their species as babies.

Yeah, she was doing it a lot. I only really noticed it while she was in the bath. After I stopped putting her in the bath, she never really did it.
The poo was a pain to get out of my shirts. I think I often just put on a new one. But yeah, it made me gag too. Very few smells can do that to me.
Ah, that might have been why she snapped at me when I tried to pick her up.

Maybe I should show my bird a video of birds bathing in puddles and bird baths xD
