Description
I've had snakes almost all my life and I have been wanting to do the cliched snake and apple thing for some time. However the snakes I have just didn't fit what I had in my head as the perfect snake to set up for that... That was until I got Black Jack! I think his color, confident demeanor and presents fit the bill well.BTW that apple was delicious! LOL

This is a brilliant photo! xD his pose is great, you've captured him at the right moment!!! the the temptation for me though would be more for taking him with me then the apple! haha.

Just the right size, too! What kind of snake IS Black Jack, anyways?

Black Jack is an extreme melanistic Black-bellied Delta California King snake. You're not going to see a snake like him anytime soon...he is probably one of a kind. I have never seen a king like him and even when I asked two experts on kings about him it took them a few days to give me a definite answer. I can't wait to breed him when he gets old and big enough. Just finding a female that is similar to him is going to be a bit tricky...

Hmm, I know Mex-Mex's can get pretty dark. If you could find another Cal king like that, that'd be great, but if you really want to see how far the dark coloring can go, try one of those.

The funny thing is I was looking to get a pair of Black Mex's at the show I got Black Jack at. However I saw him and I just couldn't pass him up. He was at a table where the vendor has a ton of species and knows little about each one...a vendor I normally stay FAR away from. But he caught my eye and I had to have him. The vendor only knew that he was a Cal King but didn't have a clue as to what species. He told me he just got him in a shipment of other mixed herps that he got. Well for $40 he was sold to me! He really is a nice and stunning snake and is going to make a really beautiful adult.

Sort of like what I usually see for LLL Reptile, then? That's a lucky find, there!

LLL Reptile is one of the few vendors that carry many species that I would buy from. They seem to generally know enough about the animals they carry. I have actually gotten herps from them in the past without any issues. But yes other vendors that sell all these different species I am normally very leery of. I'd much rather buy from a breeder that specializes in just a few species b/c most of the time those animals are the best of the best and the breeder can honestly and knowledgeably answer any questions you have about them. I definitely got lucky with Black Jack!

TY. I think Black Jack definitely makes the shot. At least how I see it...it's the kind of "snake" I picture when I think of the story.

Black racer or Black rat? Both can be pretty big and are stunning. That's cool that he/she hangs around.

Awe thank you. It helps to have a snake that is laid back enough to let me set him up with things like this. Or I wouldn't be able to get half of the photos I do. So I personally thank them for their tolerance and nonchalant attitudes!

Yeah he's still pretty small. But he's around 19 inches now...at least 4 inches bigger then when I got him in April. So he's grown fast and not going to be little for long. He's going to be one stunning looking adult!

PaganFireSnake In reply to PlayfulDead [2011-09-11 04:36:52 +0000 UTC]
He'll get to at least 4 ft. He's got quite a way to go but he's growing fast.

Wow!! I don't think I could ever get a snake again, but if I did I'd wanna stick to something that stays under/around the 1ft mark if possible LOL

PaganFireSnake In reply to PlayfulDead [2011-09-12 16:15:56 +0000 UTC]
If you want a smaller species, or at least ones that are easy to handle, I'd stick with a corn snake. Though they get bigger then 1 ft (there is one a very small # of species that stay under 1 foot and they are delicate and not easy to keep), corns are just an all round nice snake to keep. Easy to handle, calm, tame and easy to care for.

I'll keep that in mind, but I don't think I'll have one again. I like them, but not so much a pet for me. I do enjoy my reptiles and froggies though haha

Glad you like it. I've been wanting to do this for some time. But I was a bit afraid that it may some hate snakes even more. I absolutely love them and have worked very hard to show them in a better light. But I just couldn't resist this!
And I hope some people can look past the old "evil" thought of snakes and see the photo for what it is. It will make you think but it's also showing a stunning animal that is laid back enough to tolerate being handled and set-up with stuff like this.
Black Jack is awesome and I love him to pieces!
