This is Daytona, my fm Western Hermann's Tortoise

The best thing about their little nostrils is the cold, cold breath that comes out of them. I know they're cold-blooded, but it still always surprises me!

She is just at the size now where I can actually feel her breath on me which is definitely neat.

She is a Western Hermann's tortoise. One of the easiest to care for and they don't get really big. She is my little girl...so spoiled! I've had her since she was just a few weeks old...barely the size of a US quarter. If you do get one I can help you out with some care tips.

Definitely need full spectrum and heat lights. I got the highest UV light..ones used for desert herps. As for the heat. If you keep your house at around 66-68 degrees I'd use at least an 80 watt day and a slightly lesser wattage one at night. Tortoises do not do well in tanks so I would pick up one of those long and shallow Rubber-maid containers, like the ones that you can use for storage under your bed. That is what I have kept my tortoise in since I have gotten her. As for bedding...I use hay. Cut it up into small pieces, about and inch or 2 long and cover the entire tub with it. Enough for the tortoise t be able to bury itself into...at least half of themselves. These guys like the burrow. Definitely pick up a hide too. For a baby you can use an over turned tissue box. Always supply fresh water in a shallow dish and give fresh food once a day. I use a fix of two commercial pelleted foods, Zoo Meds Natural Grassland Tortoise food, Spring mix greens and of course calcium...Rep-cal Phosphorous free Calcium with Vit D. I soak the food long enough so the Grass land tortoise food softens enough to mix well in with the other foods. With tortoises remember that veggies and grasses are the biggest part of their diet. Fruits should be given sparingly. My girl loves clover, which you can get at gardening stores or order online...that and dandelion leaves are very high in vitamins and very good for them. I usually give her at least a left or two of each every day or so as well. Cactus pads are a very good idea too...also very high in vitamins and they store nicely. I cut mine into appropriate sized pieces for her. Umm I think that is pretty much it...I can get a better list of foods that are good for them and those that aren't as well if you want. The biggest thing is to really mix all of the food together with the vitamins so they can't just pick and choose what they want. They still will but mix it so the grassland stuff really sticks to the greens. If you have any other questions or want me to clear something up let me know.

That's one thing I forgot! No they don't need as much humidity, like a red footed tortoise does. But I soak her for about 15 min every few days. It not only helps to keep them hydrated (some tortoises will not drink otherwise but will if you soak them) but it also helps in getting them to poo and urinate. Yes they can do that just fine on their own but a good soak is a good thing for the whole system. Remember these guys can't swim like water turtles can and will drown if the water is too high so make she you keep an eye on the tortoise the whole time.

That is actually Daytona...my Hermann's. I have had her now for 2 yrs (since she was just a hatchling) and she just recently turned 2. I am planning on eventually getting another tortoise...maybe another Hermann's. But as of right now she is the only tort I have.
