Description So here's the commission/kiriban that I've finally finished of =Almalphia 's character. I do hope she likes it!

You know what I realize? This was a challenge, as it involved (a) the color purple (b) they're bright colors, for once, and (c) colored pencils... not something I use all that often.

No, I do not use Prismacolors. I wholeheartedly support my Derwents. They blend a lot nicer.

Almalphia is (C) to =Almalphia
Art (C) me, April Schumacher (pallanoph)

Derwents get my vote over prismacolours anyday. I've have a few Prismas but something seems strange about the texture of them. Not sure what XD

The pose and perspective is awesome here Great job at taming the evils of purple too. I find it such a hard colour to work with

Hooray! Yes, Prismas are odd. They're... waxy. Too waxy for my tastes, and I think that Derwents are clay based, if I remember correctly.

Oh I know, why is it that purple is so difficult?

I think it comes to shading. Black can look muddy for shadows, and violet highlights just seems to dull the colour. Atleast, I think that's my problem

Did you use blue to define the shadows on this picture? I think that looks like the way to go. It really brings out the purple colour rather than dulling it down

Oh yes indeedy. When I went to my college, it caused me to swear off using black, for the most part. (My painting teachers practically cried if they saw black. ) Nice dark warm browns and blues are my darks of choice... and you're right, I used blues here for the shadows. It's a nice way to go about it, not too complex, either!

Turned out great. I will remember to try it next time I have to colour something purple... which hopefully shouldn't be often!
Haha, my art teacher was the same in highschool. He literally hid the black paint and would have very sad face for anyone who went and found it

Really?! That was the most difficult part. I was sure I had nearly ruined it! (mostly a color issue)

Wow, so bright! Love the wings! This is my favorite style of the unicess, with the cloven hooves and the lion-like tail. Not so much for the beards, but still, the character is wonderful!

I do like this character's more classical design! Lion tail's are so much more appealing, eh?

Yes ^^ I have a blanket with the more traditional unicorn on it. It's a little torn, but I'm trying to keep it in decent shape....... It's all browns in coloring.

Very nice! <3 I personally think that colored pencils on their own are hard to make them look right, but you've pulled it off quite nicely <333 Love the pose!

It's those little specks of white paper that show through that make them such a pain! And the fact that they're... well, a little harder to make look "diverse" as far as textures are concerned...

That said, I'm glad this looks alright!

danji-isthmus In reply to pallanoph [2009-05-24 21:56:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it's so hard to get rid of those white spots too D: But I still think this looks good =3

Y-Esk In reply to pallanoph [2009-05-24 10:02:32 +0000 UTC]

Have you tried burnishing? It's a great technique to get rid of the white specks of paper

You just lay down the base colours and then grab a white pencil to blend all the colours together- eliminating the white paper specks in the process. Then if the colour is too washed out you can just keep colouring over the top of the burnished layer.

(I abuse burnishing badly )

pallanoph In reply to Y-Esk [2009-05-25 05:28:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes... I even found Derwent blending pencils and burnishing pencils, too! Really helps finish it off nicely.

I've just started using them, it helps out a lot. Especially since the Derwents allow you to go back over those layers.

I didn't know they had blending pencils! Awesome, i'll have to look out for them So many different Derwent sets to try.

pallanoph In reply to Y-Esk [2009-05-26 05:36:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes! And if for whatever reason you can't find them, and the place that I found them at still carries them (likely) I can just slip one in with your commissions when I mail them!

They work wonderfully!
