Description
UPDATE: Revised version located HERE:Yet another piece being made for the MCAD art sale. *sigh* Tried going a slightly different route with this one, design wise. Not sure if I succeeded or not, but it was a delightful experiment.
A red stag that appears to be sprouting branches, oh how original!
This was done on yet another cross section of basswood. I started out with some woodburning (which you can just barely see as the linework) and then proceeded to use a waterproof mahogany stain on the entire surface. After that had dried, I went in with the white acrylic, sanded part of the stain away on the stag, and darkened some areas with sepia acrylic ink. Afterwards, I went in with some final acrylic highlights, and here it is.
I'm worried that any more work on it might push it over the edge, but I could be wrong. Regardless, I'm practically out of time.
If you have suggestions, comments, critiques, etc., I'll have them.

That sounds like a very complex process to undertake for the heck of experiment. I like that mindset. : ) And the result turned out really well. There's some minor confusion for me when it comes to all the antler/branches/linework of the area around the antlers. But only compared to how boldly the body stands out.

Very nice. It fascinates me that you can not only paint, you can paint on this different surface as well.

I'm loving the blending and work on the antlers. 'Makes them very realistic.

Hey, even if the whole "antlers looking like branches" isn't original - the way you portrayed it certainly is :] Very simple and elegant. I am always amazed with your work. Don't add anything to it - it's fine the way it is, I think its focus is on the antlers and the snowy branches and I like that. I keep finding myself wishing this was on a t-shirt. I'd wear it.

Thank you! And now you've made me want this on a shirt, as well... I'll have to see if I can make this idea a reality!

I saw this and was like, wow this is different, I like different!!!!! And it is stunning, I want it. Hahahahahahaa
And I say leave it, it looks good. I hate it when you add too much becasue you can never take it back. I love it :3

I think it looks good the way it is. Leaving the wood visible on the buck makes it look dramatic (in a good way, mind )

This is stunning. I have always felt a connection to stags - so majestic and heart-wrenchingly beautiful. You have completely done this justice.

This is so beautiful, I've always loved the idea of branches and antlers combining. But I like in this piece how the branches aren't actually coming out of the antlers, but almost the idea of branches. I would love to have this piece on my wall, so I hope it sells well!

Again! Want, want!
If I could, I'd buy this right now (along with the magpie) and save you the trouble of taking them to the MCAD sale. Though that will mean you'll have fewer pieces there...
And I love the combination of techniques. Something like that wouldn't have occurred to me, uninventive dullard that I am.
Waah, I want it...

Oh dear, Niroot, but where would you put them?
I kid, of course.
I had a really small amount to submit this year, just seven pieces (4 of which are quite old...)so I feel a bit ashamed, haha. I've only got a few more years as an alumni at the sale, so I should start being more productive!
Psh, you're no dullard, you're a purist! And I envy that more than you can imagine. (Well now I want to make you a Christmas present.)

*jealous* haha, This is SO incredible. Like I really dont know what to say its so beautiful. I hope to be like you when I get older, how long has it taken you to get this this level in your painting career?

Thanks so much, you're too kind! I've been drawing for years; I'm 24 and have been trying since I was... 3, 4?
Art's a lifelong process, so I'm wondering where I'll be at 30. Just takes time, practice and patience.

Absolutely stunning. I really like how you did the antlers; rough and textured over most of it, but soft, smooth, and lighter at the tips where it's still growing. It is very realistic. :}

Why thank you! I love painting antlers, and yet I am intimidated by the process at the same time... so I'm relieved to hear these feel real.

I actually have a small antler I use as decor. I found it down by the river in town. It was discarded; fallen off of the deer. I can tell because of the smoothness on the bottom

Thanks, Amanda! I have to say I was worried that I was taking such a large gamble on such a short time frame, but was lucky it pulled together alright. Especially considering that those branches were completely unplanned!

For one...I'm astounded. That buck looks strong willed and proud.
Two, props to you for combining various techniques and mashing them together-it sure did make this one of my favorite wood paintings. Keeping the tones calm with white and sepia/browns is quit settling, yet with that stare the buck has, at the same time-strong.
Wonderful job!

Wow, I think you definitely succeeded!
I personally don't think that you should do any more work on it, as I think that it's its 'simplicity' that makes it so lovely.

Or maybe... how would it have looked if you'd used a light sand colour instead of the white? *weird idea here*
