Description
UPDATE: Revised version located HERE:Yet another piece being made for the MCAD art sale. *sigh* Tried going a slightly different route with this one, design wise. Not sure if I succeeded or not, but it was a delightful experiment.
A red stag that appears to be sprouting branches, oh how original!
This was done on yet another cross section of basswood. I started out with some woodburning (which you can just barely see as the linework) and then proceeded to use a waterproof mahogany stain on the entire surface. After that had dried, I went in with the white acrylic, sanded part of the stain away on the stag, and darkened some areas with sepia acrylic ink. Afterwards, I went in with some final acrylic highlights, and here it is.
I'm worried that any more work on it might push it over the edge, but I could be wrong. Regardless, I'm practically out of time.
If you have suggestions, comments, critiques, etc., I'll have them.

The white background brings the stag out beautifully. Love the work on the antlers.

I think you rite don't obscure the detail with over embellishment

I really love your use of the white as a sort of "outline" for the elk versus giving him black lines.
That being said, I would advize giving the elk stronger highlights to combat the white. It makes it seem somewhat flat in this current situation.

I think I've become too much of a fan of the color white for such purposes.
And do you know what's funny? After I scanned this, I decided to put a protective clear coat over the piece so that it would be harder to damage and collect less dust. (I used a wood clear coat called polycrilic... which is awesome because it has a nice satin finish! )
Anyway, after putting down the clear coat, it completely eliminated that soft subtle highlight caused by removing some of the stain. So I went back in with my acrylics and touched it up. The end result was a lot more detailed then the scan I have here, so he does look less flat in his current state.
I'm a complete idiot because I'd dropped it off at MCAD before getting a new scan of it. So if it doesn't sell, I can re-scan it and provide proof.

Aw, dang! Well, I still hope it sells. Rescanning it is hardly worth it not selling.
Also, I'm working at the Art Sale, so maybe I'll see it!

This is awesome. The white brings out the colour of the stag that a normal wood colour just wouldn't.

Amazing work - I love the detail of the branches, and the way they're painted in white makes the piece look almost ethereal and divine <3
Very majestic, and I love the ruff on his neck

This really is amazing. Don't change a thing.
I'm really interested in the method. I got to try that sometime.

You always combine such interesting techniques Looks just wonderful to me, especially the burning combined with the staining. To be honest, to me it doesn't look as much as the stag would be sprouting the branches as much it's just posing in front of them

This is lovely! It's quite a neat trick how you got that almost pearl-like luminescence to the trees!
Excellent work!

I think you're right to not want to continue, its at a stage of completion that if you go too much further you'll want to start adding insane details to the background. That being said....I'd like to see this as a label for a bottle of Scotch.

Wonderful! I can't imagine it'd be possible for this and the Magpie to NOT completely blow people away at the MCAD sale! This is wonderful here, but I bet it's stunning in real life, especially with the wood-burning!

wow! It's gorgeous! I love those leaves and branches, they're so natural and delicate looking! However, I think maybe around the outside or somewhere there could have been a little more of the woods natural colour and texture coming through to get a more 'organic' feel to it. Although, I'm not the one to speak since I can't see it in real life!
Anyway, It's beautiful! I especially love the way the branches sort of BURST out from behind the deers head., like a lovely...leafy explosion! YAAAAY!

YES. Someone needs to make this happen! (I should become more well versed in terms of t-shirt printing companies, etc.) I wonder if something like this would go on Threadless...

I suggest Redbubble over Threadless, though it's certainly worth a shot on Threadless!

I think it's gorgeous as is. I really like the simplicity of it, and I think pushing it further would be overboard.

I think you should try to make an Impressionist painting someday. It will either be liberating, or an exercise in futility. Looks good as usual

This is beautiful! I especially like your combination of pyrography and acrylics--that's something I don't think I've seen before. I also like how you used the acrylics as almost a watercolor and made some of the branches translucent--almost reminds me of a negative.
