Description Oh yes. More sketches. I did warn you, after all.

Though I do heartily encourage critique at all times, I must also let you know that this is likely one of my first serious attempts at drawing a wild boar! So there are most definitely mistakes, and you're more than welcome to point them out. I won't bite. I wonder, though, if a boar can even turn its head so far?

To the point: Here we have a scene involving a pair of pallanophs from the Teirn tribe (Germanic) running down a boar. This type almost exclusively hunts wild boar when they aren't foraging for other foods (as omnivores, they will also eat fungi, berries, and a few herbs). They may occasionally subsist on smaller prey, though this is less common as the Teirn live rather communally in small family units. Hunting parties go forth every few days on such hunts, consisting mainly of males in their prime. Females do not regularly accompany the males when hunting boar, but may partake in their own separate hunts after less dangerous prey, which may consist of deer, or they may accompany their offspring in search of other edibles for gathering. Males of this type are fiercely devoted to their mates, and overall they tend to discourage females from participating in these very dangerous hunts for fear of fatal injury. However, there are exceptions to this "rule." Females of a more fiery nature, for example, may be permitted to join the males in these hunts.

Due to the boars' keen sense of smell, the pallanophs must make use of the breeze and keep downwind, using their stealth to take advantage of their prey's poor eyesight. After a brief chase they leap for the back and hindquarters in an effort to bring down the beast. They then rally around in a circle to strike while keeping clear of the lethal tusks. Despite the speed and agility of the Teirn, injuries are not uncommon!

Just a little snippet of background information for once.

Whow, what are you talking about?! This is certainly not just a sketch, - it's a masterpiece !!
You should seriously consider painting this and exposing it in a public gallery, - it's so impressively realistic

Ah no, not masterpiece, just a rough drawing. I'm not certain I'd ever get around to finishing it up as a painting, but I'm glad to hear you think it should be one!

I don't know about boar anatomy to point out any mistakes personally, but the dynamic here is awesome. Both creatures look so fierce and it really feels like they are in motion.

Thanks very much! Boar anatomy is tricky, and they have virtually no neck. One can take artistic license at times, yes?

Thank you! I find it amusing that instead of playing it safe and choosing a more readily available angle for my boar (profile, for instance) I go with my awkward 3/4 angle, ha. I'll just keep practicing.

I think I could stand to do more "info snippets", though I don't like to give away too much.

GaianBells In reply to pallanoph [2010-07-16 05:03:59 +0000 UTC]

Eh, so unlike lions or wolves or hyenas, pallanophs divide labor like humans do along sex/gender lines? Women at home taking care of kids, and men doing the hunting? As you say, it's not a strictly enforced rule, but are female pallanophs in general smaller/meeker?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to GaianBells [2010-07-16 19:47:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, yes and no at the same time. Female pallanophs tend to be a good deal smaller and lighter than males, and though they possess the same degree of speed as their male counterparts, they don't have the weight and bulk they need in some instances. In the Teirn tribe, females are given more or less free reign with what they wish to do. (Which is why they may go out together and hunt for deer and other prey. ) Part of the reason they live in family communities is so that the young will be well socialized by not just the parents, but by elders, as well as other families. Therefore, if a mother wishes to get away for an instant, she can leave her young in the care of either the father or another family member.

The case with females and boar hunting is not terribly uncommon, I guess, but it is often if a female is unmated, a proven hunter, and of an assertive nature. Normally females of the Teirn tribe have little interest in hunting boar! In other tribes, (especially those that are less communal in nature) it is often that a mated pair will hunt side by side. Younger or unmated individuals may hunt alone for smaller prey/scavenge or gather into small hunting parties.

Oof, I hope that wall of text made sense... I think I unintentionally contradict myself at times!

Oh, forgot to ask. So would you say that pallanophs have a patriarchal society?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

GaianBells In reply to pallanoph [2010-07-17 16:30:56 +0000 UTC]

That's interesting! If there's not a social reason for it, then there must be a biological reason for it, which is what I guessed. In this case, there's both! Thanks for explaining. It makes sense.

Extremely fierce. Boar are definitely formidable creatures, and hunting one would be no easy feat!

Wow. That is really neat.
I particularly love the boar's mouth/tusks and the closest pallanoph's paws -- all of them are marvelous and show movement really well. The fur as usual is amazing, and the expressions are very detailed.

And... graphite tinted in photoshop!? Maybe I just haven't been reading your comments thoroughly enough, but now I know your seeeeccrreeettt! Haha, I'll have to try something like that sometime. I've always admired your sepia-toned sketches. Why didn't I think of that before? haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to Kyranth-Wolfen [2010-07-15 17:05:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Seeing as how I have a not-so-minor obsession with tusks, it's amazing I hadn't attempted to draw a wild boar earlier.

Ah, but this is the only drawing I've submitted with the tinting done in photoshop! The other sepia tone sketches/ink drawings were done in sepia ink. But yes, throwing an otherwise predictable graphite drawing into photoshop and adjusting tone can make something a little more appealing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kyranth-Wolfen In reply to pallanoph [2010-07-15 18:48:58 +0000 UTC]

The tusks are beautiful! Yeah, wild boar are kinda interesting subjects. Unusual but very fun.

And oh... maybe that explains why I never figured out your 'secret'. Anyway, it is very good for making it look like a really great piece. Because in regular pencil stuff looks so boring sometimes. Well, you had a great idea there!

You could draw a million things in sepia ink now and I'll question whether or not it is pencil or ink. I'm too stupid and stubborn to know the difference very well.

The boar is fine from what I see. At least you didn't give it a dog's nose like some artists! And I love the angle the pallanoph is coming from.
