pallanoph β€” Waterfall Crossing

Description I decided to submit this by itself, since it's something... different: It's an earnest attempt at drawing a background, and a scene, at that! I've been sketching out potential and established scenes from the infamous "pallanoph novel" between commissioned paintings/etc. (I'm so slow, I should seriously be shot.) I liked illustrating this little moment so much I have intentions of putting it in the book: So here is Adelaide, the young girl, and Nharath the pallanoph crossing near a waterfall.

I know, it's not in color, and it's only a sketch, but... Deal with it. You don't have to keep me on your devwatch, you know. I'll be showing you more hideous, drab and scruffy paintings at some point in the future: I just need time and motivation in excess.

Oh. Would any of you mind seeing a sketchdump? I can put one together if there's enough interest, and will probably spam you anyway. Because I'm heartless and really don't care.

No. Really.

Graphite tinted in photoshop; original version is about 13"x 5.5". It looks better small, I think.

Art and characters are Β© me, April Schumacher. Please do not utilize for your own purposes, thank you.

I don't know why so many people seem uninterested or hesitant in uploading sketches!!! I am personally so very glad that you did upload this! Seeing lesser-refined sketchiness really brings out the conceptual aspects, I believe, and I love to see this kind of thought and work from people!

I really love how you made the waterfall present but very much in the background. The depth is wonderful!

Wonderfully creative, just re check on your trees on the left hand side, tree on the right is almost a living thing but trees on the left are just totally not trees. Sorry for being a pain in the ass and I do mean what I say, I think it is wonderful.

Lovely. I like how you're able to suggest a waterful with only a few lines.

Is Adelaide the first human to ever ride a pallanoph? Even if she isn't, she's lucky to get to form a relationship with such a gorgeous creature.

And I'd love to see a sketchdump! Spam away!

Thanks! I'd forgotten how much I enjoy drawing waterfalls.

Adelaide isn't the first as far as pallanophs in general go, but it's likely she's the first to befriend a member of the Nehrannon tribe... They're quite arrogant by pallanoph standards, and don't take much of a liking towards humans in general, especially if there's a territorial issue. Humans often referred to this type as "hellhounds" and were greatly exaggerated in stories to the point where they nearly became supernatural. So, that being said, it's quite remarkable these two become allies.

wyrd66 In reply to pallanoph [2011-09-25 23:34:24 +0000 UTC]

So how much interaction is there normally between humans and pallanophs? Is it generally friendly?

I really like how Nehrannon have evolved into "hellhounds" in their region.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to wyrd66 [2011-09-27 06:21:01 +0000 UTC]

There wouldn't have been all that much interaction between humans and pallanophs, but that depends on the type. The Teirn tribes would have kept more or less to themselves, even if curiosity brings some close enough to learn about human habits. Some of the more northern tribes, like the Daskor of Denmark/surrounding coastal areas, the Andir of Norway, and the Skirdet of Sweden tend to have slightly more positive interactions with humans, and though the pallanophs respect humans and know what we are capable of in terms of weapons and force, they do tend to decide the level at which they interact with humans, and don't really let humans get closer than they want them. Then again, the humans from said regions once thought of them as slightly supernatural, with ties to pagan gods, and the pallanophs enjoyed the resulting privileges. Of course, some pallanophs find human company to be rather interesting, so friendships are possible, though pallanophs also need their space.

The Nehrannon certainly earned themselves a reputation, that's for sure.

I love how much thought you've put into this.

It's so interesting that pallanophs were considered tied to gods. What kind of privileges did they get? Worship? Offerings?

Thank you for answering my question in such depth! I hope that you don't mind that I asked a couple more!

Also, I wouldn't mind a sketch dump of yours, either. It'd be cool to see what kinds of things you don't usually post up here.

I hate making them myselfβ€”too much cropping and pasting and picking and choosingβ€”but I love seeing them from other people.

I like this drawing very much on its own, too. Water is tricky, but don't be afraid to tackle it!

Each time I put together a sketchdump, I worry I'll crash Photoshop. It's a bit nerve-wracking. But, I do love seeing them.

Drawing wise, water and I have come a long way together. Painting or drawing, either way I love it.

Very nice. I like how you help us see the pine trees and the water. The water has movement and is light in the right places. Appropriately, she is not looking at the falls because she would get spray in her face if she did. Even the rocks have the look of boulders. It reminds me of where we went for Labor Day weekend.

Some of my favorite places involve waterfalls... and it's a pity that I'd never had a proper camera to capture them! And rocks, oh they're so tricky for me to tackle, so I'm glad this feels real to you.

Carryn In reply to pallanoph [2011-09-25 04:48:58 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. I can relate to the rocks. I sat at the two waterfalls we went to and tried to draw them in both graphite and colored pencils. It was difficult.

I think it's a good background, especially as you rarely attempt them. The composition works well, and overall I don't think there's anything that stands out in a negative way; I'd change nothing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pallanoph In reply to line-melte [2011-09-25 04:11:26 +0000 UTC]

Why thanks! I really don't know just what it is that keeps me from drawing backgrounds: Unfamiliar territory? Uninspired by my surroundings? I swear I'd paint more landscapes if I lived/grew up in a more picturesque place. Oh, my excuses...

Though the interesting thing is that backgrounds always seem more interesting once I get to painting them. They're just not terribly interesting to draw. *ponders*

line-melte In reply to pallanoph [2011-09-27 11:00:16 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you there; drawing backgrounds and landscapes isn't particularly engaging. When doing the underdrawing for a painting my trees, for example, are just scribbles. It gets a lot more fun when painting them.
