I was wondering how fast this would come up in here. I am super addicted to terraria right now, it's hard not to be. I do suggest crafters should go check it out.

I think Terreria is right on the line between inspiration and plagiarism... If notch approves I'll say is inspiration. Besides, it does add quite a bit.

Terraria is supposed to be a "rival" with Minecraft.
So, it's technically neither.

He likes the game and said that he didn't give any of the code from Minecraft to Terraria. Plus, he isn't going to sue them, since one, he's cool with it, and two, why sue a game maker for using a mechanic your game uses? That'd be like the makers of Doom suing the makers of Duke Nukem 3D.

Yeah. I actually just got it and its a LOT different than minecraft. There is some similarities, but mostly the mining and lots of games have that. I mean even Notch got the idea from another game, Infinimer.

Yup, and everyone's seen how fanboys reacted to that, jumping to Minecraft's defence.

Sounds like a great game! Though it is inspired heavily on Minecraft and Zelda mainly from what I can tell but still . . . It's a unique game. Who knows what Minecraft is based on or what thing they ripped off (A possibly bad or underrated game, I don't know!).
I want to try it sometime.

Yeah, but their are many more ([link] to development first page) but the point is, really good games are based on other games, great or bad. Bad games could've been good if it delivered more on something and did this better and so on. And good games you can learn on what mechanics worked, what you should do to implement into your game. Many good games are based on games, like Rift, WOW(2 MMO's), Terraria and Minecraft isn't much of a exception. Though some games aren't based on any games but that's pretty uncommon now a days, if not impossible. It's how life works.

I think maybe the combat has a little shine by Zelda, but Terria is like WoW and Rift in "We will take this good mechanic and this good mechanic and you can keep these bad mechanics!"

"Sounds like a great game! Though it is inspired heavily" not even close very little inspiration from Minecraft, think metroid and castlevania and mario and very little bit of minecraft..........

From what I've seen, it's a lot like Minecraft in building and exploring. Though Terraria seems to have better exploring possibilities (possibly caused by only 5 types of ores and coal is uselessly easy to get and Diamond is rare and redstone is extremely hard to get a handle on. Though think it has some inspiration from Black and White 2, because you can do certain things to get a type of merchant and so on and so forth. Where Black and White requires some kind of point system (Impressiveness or something like that) to make people leave their town to join you.

except for the mining, a few of the icons for the tools (sword and pickaxe are exactly the same as minecrafts, for instance), the water physics and graphics for water, the crafting of houses blocks by blocks, mining blocks from a mine, hitting a tree over and over to get wood (that one could be in any game though), the swinging motion made by their arms when they are collecting things.... saying it was inspired very little bit by minecraft is an understatement

Dear SargeGFX,
This discussion ended quite a long time, roughly 5 or so months, in fact. Upon reading the entire discussion, you may understand that I came to the conclusion that I may try the game out, and most of the misunderstandings were already taken care of. I appreciate your effort to re-illiterate the facts, but sadly it is unnecessary.
Have a pleasant day, and have fun playing Terraria. If you haven't tried out Minecraft yet, I do reccemend doing so soon, for the game will be releasing not so far from how, and the discount available currently will be over.
Again have a pleasant day and have fun playing Terraria
Sincerely from the desk of,
Toderico

seeing the video is enough to know all of these facts, there may be more ripped off that I'd find out if i played, but i'm not going to waste 10 bucks when i already have a similar and better game that I spent the same amount of money on.

I only play one type of Minecraft game, and that is Minecraft. I play multiple other games that do not rip off Minecraft, such as Civ V or Team Fortress 2. From my standpoint, it is a waste of money to buy a game twice, and that's all I would be doing if I bought 'Terraria'.

whoa whoa whoa deviantart is not for fighting over minecraft and terraria that's youtube, you both bring great points cant we just let minecraft be minecraft and terraria be terraria and not fight over which copied which. every game barrows something from a game its like saying Mario copied sonic you could fight about it for days but at the end they are both great games and are made for fun.

You remind me of a few people who were addicted to minecraft and said the exact same thing, i gave them Terraria and guess where their addiction now shifted to.
They discovered that it's not a clone, despite videos making it look like it.

Nope, despite the official videos that Terraria put out themselves?
If it's not a clone, they shouldn't point out the main features being 'Build, Mine, kill monsters!', or any of the main features of Minecraft. Either it's bad marketing, or a clone.

ok, but for the record, your point becomes a little devalued by saying the conversation is over, or using a slash command as if I'm a mindless computer. And it's a game, I'm not hurting the games feelings, this guy posted this to purposely start up crap about terraria and minecraft, cause everyone knows alot of minecrafters don't like this game. The only way this photo would be related technically would be that he made it in minecraft, but with corrupt reasons.

You're really taking this so overly serious?
It's just a game, relax.
I'm just saying that people who judge things without trying them themselves are bad people.
That's all.

Toderico In reply to Ocfos [2011-05-28 15:51:08 +0000 UTC]
I understand this is just a game, but you are the one making it personal by calling me a bad person. I was 'just' saying that Terraria is just a game simply heavily inspired by Minecraft, and the artist here said that it was hardly inspired or even influenced by Minecraft at all.
Also, that phrase is a little faulty, I know it sorta relates to this, but you cannot say someone is a bad person just because they don't like something, regardless of trying it out. I am entitled to my opinion, as is everyone else. But the reason I am being 'overly serious' is because you have insulted me from the start, thinking that a slash end command would make me obey, and then you did the slash command again (it's like telling someone to sit like a dog). And then your reply just now, calling me a bad person, when all I have been saying is that Terraria was heavily influenced by Minecraft, if not a considerable amount.
Please re-read your reply to my last reply, and realize how insulting and passive aggressive it looks. (Rephrased: 'Why are you so serious? Relax, I'm just saying your a bad person, that's all.')

I didn't say you were a bad person, i said people who judge things without having tried them are.
That you apparently find yourself fitting under that isn't my fault.
And the slash command thing was an obvious joke, you even did it yourself.
I'm not gonna waste further time on this argument which isn't even logical.
Just stop already.
