I took a break from comic pages and ended up working on this on and off for a while. Spendin' some time to render some old man dragon tiddies. WIP (old version of the face) here

This version of Smaug is from the 1977 version of The Hobbit .
I tried to be more on-model with the movie designs this time.

People criticize this Smaug design for being fairly weird (which it is), but it is actually morphologically close to how Tolkien drew his dragons with some East Asian influences.

Also his bloated body and over-rendered hair and wrinkles add an element of grossness which is something that I kind of miss from dragons these days.

This was what I decided to do to break in my new iPad and try using Procreate.

I'd recommend iPad Pro + Apple Pen for portable art sketchbook thing (though I'm not a fan of iOS) because it feels a lot better to me than a lot of other options I've tried w/ similar cost.

Procreate is often recommended as a digital art program for iPad. It feels like a step backwards compared to most digital art software I've used because its missing a lot of common digital art features (like changing canvas resolutions after creating a canvas, and expanding/contract selections), but the interface and brushes are nice and it is pretty fast & loose to do some quick drawing in.
