Description Wow. If you haven't seen the story yet on this, here goes.

Wow guys. I am flat out amazed right now. Don and I were sitting at our computers working on candle stuff and all of a sudden two of our neighborhood hummingbirds came in and tried to get out through the window. But, it was closed, and I can't remove the screens to let them out. So we brought out two of our acrylic containers and they dropped in on their own. The one I caught was a rufous hummingbird. He flew right out as soon as he realized he was outside. I expected the same from this other fellow, but poor baby was so tired (didn't land once while in the house until the container was put under him) he didn't want to leave. So I put him in my hand (we're on the second floor, and I wasn't sure he hadn't injured himself) and tried to coax him to fly off. He tried to fall asleep in my hand instead. Finally just got him to fly free, but had to get a picture of me holding him first. Don is a pretty damn good photographer if you ask me

Oh I'm so envious! I've been trying to get our hummingbirds comfortable with my presence all summer^^ That is just too cool!

One of the best things to do is to make sure you are outside, not overly close to your feeders, and just stay still, or move slowly. And as I'm sure you've already figured out, the birds can be very very skittish. And strangely that varies between species too. Good luck with it!

Yes, she does! I was surprised too when I saw them. First thought that she just had a feather on the side of her face peaking through, but the other shots I have show that it's actually eyelashes I honestly never would have thought that birds had them too, but it makes sense.

Wow, that's quite an experience. We've had hummingbird females make nests in our trees for years, and they're feisty mommas. Get too close and she'll come buzzing down to inspect you and make sure you're not going to threaten her nest.

Damn that's so cute! I love hummingbirds! Wish I could see them in real but we don't have them here in the Netherlands. Too bad

The detail is amazing and I can see eyelashes indeed! The feathers also have such beautiful colours! You're lucky to hold a humminbird. Really beautiful photo

I'm envious My wife and I have a feeder that at least three of these little guys fight over (really need to add another feeder or two) so we get to see them on a daily basis, dancing around in the air.

But to actually hold one, or have it fall asleep in your hand ... that's just magic

Nice capture on the photo, too. Excellent details

Thanks! Actually I was more than a little worried that holding her could cause damage somehow. You know how you hear about the "don't pick up a baby bird" and all that. With the hummingbirds being so small, I think I figured it was the same sort of thing.

We've got at least 4 here (with 1 feeder) that make their rounds in the morning and evening.

now there is some major detail. I was wondering if you got a close up or not. It is so cute how long did it sit in your hand?? 10 min or so?? Did you feel the fast heartbeat and the warmth of its little body?

about 5 minutes and yes. he started calming down (his heart was beating so fast at first) and then started dozing. he's got his eyes shut in this picture.
