Description
A male Costa's Hummingbird flashes me as I approach to photograph him. It is quite a treat to be able to be so close to these exquisite jewels and observe them as they go about their daily business of courting, nesting and feeding in this open air building. Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum, near Tucson, Arizona.Related content

Very beautiful shot. I swear, hummingbirds like this always look like they are perpetually pissed off.

"To the victor go the spoils"... there is no second place in the hummingbird hierarchy... it is win or lose.
It is even more intense between the types of hummers: the Rufus hummingbird is one of the tiniest of them all and can outmaneuver even the slightly larger... and the damage they can inflict to Ruby throated hummingbirds, etc. is unbelievable.
Thank you for your comments!

I wouldn't be to surprised on the infliction one can do to another. Wild Nature is scary as hell sometimes, even with something as small as these hummers.

Brilliant! The colours and focus are of course very well done, but I also love the expression you've caught!

It is edited but not distorted... that is what a male Costa's Hummingbird looks like and it is quite an intense visual experience [although visually the Anna's Hummingbird is even more intense but they do not have the "gorget"... the bib like feather extension under the chin for which the Costa's Hummingbird is famous]. I hope that someday you have a chance to witness these flying jewels in person!!!

Thanks... it is processed in photoshop [but not altered]... that's what a male Costa's Hummingbird looks like. Actually they are much more intensely brilliant in person.
