Description Broadtail hummingbird photographed last year at the Hummingbird Aviary in the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum near Tucson, Arizona. To be in an enclosure with so many hummingbirds was a one of the major highlights of our trip and we hope to return there soon.

this is real sweeet !
was this taken indoors or out ?
because ruby throated are only indigenous to the eastern half of the U.S
otherwise it could be a broadtail ?
still a way cool shot !
i love how he's looking right !

Thank you very much for your input... this was taken in a screened-in enclosure and [I just checked the brochure that I saved... the hummers are "native" so I assume you are correct]. I am not familiar with hummers other than the Ruby-throated [even though we supposedly have three species here in Wisconsin] and my forays into on-line identifications of the different hummers we photographed out west has been rather unsuccessful. It looks like it could be a broadtail and it makes sense that it is not a Ruby-throated after all.

no prob - i come from MA and we only have that one there.
i'm in colo now and at least 4 visit our area ? the broadtail is the most common, but the rufous(M) IMO is the best looking (?)
but if it was in a screened in enclosure it can be a ruby that was brought in ? but it just looks like a broad - which has a much wider red colored underside of the throat (?)

I am pretty sure you are right... the elongated body shape doesn't match the stubby Ruby-throated and the Rufous was my favorite at the exhibit!!!
