Description Image

This years summer was far from great in terms of weather, luckily enough I didn't miss all that much because I worked the whole of it

Wheal Coates is an old tin mine that sits on the cliffs above Chapel Porth a small cove east of St Agnes. I arrived at the site about 30 minuets before sunset and scouted around for a decent composition, I ended up knee deep in gorse and heather, not the most comfortable situation and in the process lost one of my rubber feet from the end of one tripod leg

The shot consists of two horizontal shots both of which have been blended from 2 exposures as I couldn't use my filters.

Location

Wheal Coates, St. Agnes, Cornwall, UK

Date and Time

14/08/2008, 20:47

Equipment

Nikon D70 | Nikon 18-70mm | focal length 38mm x 2 | ISO200 | f/11 | 1/8s / 1/2s | Hoya CPL | Manfrotto 055Prob + 141RC tilt pan head

The composition of this is great. It makes the architecture seem like it's right in front of the viewer which can be hard to achieve. Gorgeous lighting too. The pastel colours in the sky, especially near the horizon, look amazing!

Great shot. I wish we had buildings that old over here but the oldest buildings in Oregon aren't even 200 years old.

These only date back to the mid 19th century, that is the good thing about the UK, its history. However we are so caught up in it we can't move forward

If you haven't already replaced the rubber foot for your tripod I would suggest going to your ,ocal hardware store to find one that will fit. I have lost many now and Manfrotto was asking something like $30 CAD for a set of four and then I found some just as good that fit perfect for $1.49 each with a bit of searching.

Luckily I had found one on a trip to the beach once and kept it! What's the likely hood of that? I've found quite a few camera bits on shoots, lens caps, rubber eye cups, tripod feet

They are remains of a tin mining industry that put this area of Britain on the map and it was one of the riches places in the world at it's peak. But due to most Industries in the UK it has been driven into the ground by cheaper imports and government legislation.

Cornwall is littered with these old Engine houses and mine shafts they are no more than a tourist attraction and a reminder of a once thriving industry.

Such a great place and a fantastic shot, my Grandad worked this mine for many years, I always think of him and all the other miners each time I walk around this area.

That makes it all the more special, I want to shoot more engine houses and tbh I don't know why I haven't seeing as I love in the heart of the mining heritage area.
