Description
ImageI admit it's been a while since I was last shooting landscapes, over two months in fact, but due to other commitments and a wedding to photograph I have been pretty busy over the Christmas period.
On a day trip to see family back in south Cornwall I made a visit to one of my first playgrounds. Porthtowan a small beach surrounded by high cliffs, not much scope when the tide is high but an additional 3 miles of sandy beaches are reviled at low tide providing excellent scope even after 5 years of visiting this beach. Throughout my years in photographing landscapes I would like to think I have improved with my efficiently, technical abilities and especially the art of planning shots. However shooting the coastline can never be predictable, every tide, every season, every break in the cloud will bring something new. This is one of the main aspects that I loved about photographing nature and the coatline that you couldn't plan what would happen until you arrived. This time was no different, arriving at the beach (covered in ice might I add) I saw the sun reappering under fleeting clouds, I took a gamble heading to the foot of the cliff setting up and waiting for the light, I break in the cloud produced a fantastic sunstar and damn flare which is something very predictable. I hope to make more photo trips in the near future and not to leave it so long next time.

Super shot, I love Cornwall so much!
I think the blown highlights have to be this way, it would look totally unnatural any other way.

i love it guy,i'd suggest alex fails to see that it conveys an emotion a unique moment, technicality shouldnt get in the way of a shot like this, the fact is you can't take a shot into a sun with this intensity without some kind of blown highlight and other than that its how you'd see it anyway....this just takes me to many beaches and many moments and it makes me yearn to get to the coast...

Thanks Steve, I have been waiting for an opportunity to shoot these rocks surrounded by water at this beach for years and I find them so iconic especially here in Cornwall. Makes me want to move back down there!

Like it! I love the bright sun. If it looks realistic then you have my vote. The highlights may be blown but your dealing with pure sunlight there and it looks fine in my opinion. Some awesome clouds there as well.

To be honest guy, whilst its a nice scene I think you can do better both technically (blown highlights) and compositionally.

Although the composition is simple I don't think I could have improved it as such but the blown highlights have a huge impact on the final image.

It's not simplicity that I have an issue with. The foreground rock is quite central and very substantial, the light on it just doesnt make it a good feature in my opinion
