Description Common Name: Chital
Common Name Synonyms: Axis Deer, Spotted Deer
Scientific Name: Axis axis
Size: 90cm tall in the shoulders, 170cm long from snout to tail. Males are 20% larger than females.
Classification: Artiodactyl Ungulate
Habitat: Forests, Jungles, Swamps, Grasslands, Savannas
Diet: Herbivorous; Diet consisted of grass, shoots, fruit, shrubs, and rarely crabs
Description: Chitals are known to be the most common mammals in India. The males have antlers, longer than the hog deer. But like deer(except for reindeer), females don't have antlers. These herbivores can graze, as well as they browse, but they have few natural predators, like lions, tigers, leopards, wolves, dholes, pythons, crocodiles, jackals, and dingoes. Males are less vulnerable than females and their fawns. When the langur sees a tiger, or other predator that stalks on the plains, they alarm, so the deer can respond their alarm calls from the monkeys.
