Last names in Equestria are not always passed down from generation to generation, but more noble families believe in the tradition of passing down the family name to be considered honorable. Trixie Lulamoon, who came from such a family, insisted on the passing of her surname to her first born son.
Despite his name, Lionheart (Nicknamed "Lionel" by friends and family) is actually quite cowardly; he jumps at even the slightest noise and is easily kept awake at night by his fear of the dark. To mask his timidness, he carries himself with a sense of arrogance, believing himself to be superior to his peers due to his bloodline (Through Trixie's side, Lionel can be directly traced through blood to the famous Starswirl the Bearded) and he adores bringing it up to make other ponies feel insignificant.

Despite his lineage, Lionel is terrible at magic.
