Digital art. It's probably a tiled and warped stock image.

I've hand drawn chainmail enough times that I don't let my characters use chainmail anymore, I don't even care if it's impractical

I doubt it stock, the chain is wrong (unless the stock image was no good) Most common used technique is 4 through 1 (which is what this looks like it should be but isn't), each link should be interlinked with 4 others, 2 from the row above and 2Β from below sharing 2 links (one above and one below) with it's neighboring link. He's drawn two interlinking rows and then repeated them, which doesn't work. I have a chain stock in my gallery but the links are too close for what he's doing unfortunately.
