Description Weekly coffee shop sketch night exercise: 8 really quick panels of robots, different feels and compositions. 10 minutes each, using only big fat Sharpie Markers, fast colors paint bucket filled in PhotoShop.

When I do too much small, fussy art, I need to do something quick and spontaneous to dust out the cobwebs. Pretty happy with most of the panels. No idea what the hell I am thinking in each panel, just to make them all unique in each case. That is all.

Really nice work. I think my favorite is either the second one or the second to the last one, for reasons unknown. I don't really know why, but I'm just drawn to them(:

I love this one so much, that I decided to try and re-create a few of them [so far] on MS Paint. I'm a robot fanatic. I credited you, and linked your picture to mine. I hope you like them. [link]

Wow, very cool! I'm always amazed to see someone re-create stuff I've done. Good results, though. I like the Octobot one best so far. Given how well you've done, you should try a robot or two of your own design. Go for it!

I saw a button at a con some years back. It said "I do cute to pay the bills. I do weird to detox from cute".

That's an awesome "detox" drawing, by any standards!

Thanks. Quick drawings are just a good idea to make us less fussy about our own art, I've found.

Please to educate; who is Lynd Ward? Your help is appreciated in my knowledge quest.

Hi Paul,

Sorry for the delay in response. Lynd Ward was a woodcut artist and engraver. There is a detailed entry on wikipedia @ [link]

Here is a cover from a Faith No More album that uses an image from one of Ward's "novels": [link]

Your robots were very emotive and dark. Also, the crisp, bold, graphic style reminded me of woodcut prints. Not to say your work looks like Ward's, your style is your own. It was the feeling it gave and the graphic language that brought Ward's work to mind.

Good to "talk" to you. See you 'round....

Robot Rule!

OK, I knew the name seemed familiar. Thanks for the links, I really dig that style of woodcutting with all the small imperfections and texture. It's a nice change from everything being TOO clean and perfect all the time.

I'm loving the heavy inks used here That and the two colour mode you've got going for each of the robots

Really great work

When I get sloggy in my drawing, it's always good to do some simple, quick non-precise stuff. This is the result.

I likes the result!

This may be nice as a print you know it'll look great in those funky hippy houses

You and those Sharpies. I have no idea how people can draw straight from pen. I like the green one on the top and the purple one on the bottom best. The green one reminds me of the Iron Giant and is really cute, like something you'd want as a friend. The purple one is creepy not only because it looks like a girl, but the symbol on the eye reminds me of a swastika for some reason, giving me the impression that it's a Nazi killer robot.

Nope, one of the other people at Drawing Night said I should do a "sexy" robot, which I thought I was doing, until I finished and then said, "Huh, that's just a creepy robot that happens to be a girl."
So there you go; best intentions, bad results.

Thanks. I'm working really hard to finish "88". I'm hoping to get it out by the end of the year.

All are very unique and well established.

Did you do them in order or did you skip around?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PaulSizer In reply to X-Quantum-Anomaly-X [2007-07-26 11:23:33 +0000 UTC]

I did them 2 up on 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper, in the order you see them from top left to bottom right. I also just did the panel first and then made myself fill the panel in an interesting way compositionally. It was actually good for me to just bang these out, as I've been getting too fussy with my layouts lately, and this forced me to speed up things.
