Redirect to original
Description
For a few months a system on dA allows us to view e.g. other deviations of the same gallery without needing to refresh the whole page. That might be a bit faster, and be more pleasant to eye (without that white blink when the page starts loading), but has a big impact on bookmarking or copy-pasting the URL shown in the address bar when we want to show someone a particular deviation. In such case, having clicked on the link or the bookmark, the user downloads the first page on which he landed to view the deviation (e.g. gallery, other work of the same artist, category), and then the deviation itself is loaded.I know the textbox with similar facility is hidden in the Share menu, but it isn't good for bookmarking either. One must copy the address in the "Link" section, paste it in their sidebar and then bookmark it. Or click the title to be redirected to static version of the deviation page.
The other way out is to include a line in page's header:
which might be good for bookmarks. This way users would still need to drop-down the Share menu to let someone know about the deviation in a more efficient way.
PS. Excuse me for my interpretation of permalink icon. I'm not a good pixel artist.
Ed. Thank you so much for the Daily Deviation! I hope this helps and dA deviations' pages would get the Permalink button (or the fav.me alias link more exposed).

That's one of the things I had in mind, the other being just the visual disadvantages of double-loading. But I've also heard about people who had their stocks not appreciated because the manip artist linked them with a lengthy URL that stopped working!

That's true! I've had that happen to me as well! This would be good for them. c:

Don't you get the same result when you click the title of the deviation?

yes, but not everyone knows that, and it doesn't always work unfortunately

I haven't heard about it not working, but it's just not an obvious way. It should be clear stated

Whenever I link anyone a deviation I right click the title of the deviation and copy the link from that. It's a real hassle when most people still don't know how to do that. Slower computers just can't handle the way they've changed up the link system (because the whole gallery of thumbnails wants to load, like you said).
Thank you for this! I hope it gets listened to!

It's a suggestion, something the dA artist created to express what change they want to see in the site.

This is actually a better idea than the current fav.me option. Maybe when you click the button, a permalink and the thumb code pop up for easier access.

Thanks for thinking so! I let the dA designers do the work, I just gave the idea. It could be like the current "Favourite" button, with a dropdown menu with options like normal permalink and fav.me in textboxes and if you click on it directly, you are taken to the deviation standard URL (as if you clicked on the deviation thumb in DD or your messages).

That doesn't sound like a bad idea actually.
It's kinda annoying to click a link to a deviation which sends you to their gallery/userpage and then the deviation.

it already has that as an option I thought? You just click the deviation title and it's all good.

As I said in the Artists' Comments - I know about it, but it's not obvious one. Alternatively, it could show up only when user arrives at the page using the no-refreshing method.

I do, too. But, taking the amount of people not knowing about this, a button or a more exposed "Link" section would be nice.

Why do we need another button for this when we already have permalinks in the title and the share menu, as you said?

pawelabrams In reply to meihua [2011-11-01 20:00:22 +0000 UTC]
The link section could be more exposed, as it's just not obvious. People don't want to search for it under deviation's title or in a not-well known section. Link to the deviation is one of the most important matters - and should be somewhere in the view.

Brilliant suggestion! That would be so useful, I spend so much time having to tell people in my group they credited the stock with a temporary link and half the time they don't understand/beleive me but I know after several months the search generated links just stop working Lead people to a random search or my group home page instead of the stock image *sigh*

Thank you for sharing! I knew it causes trouble, but didn't think of those, who must have proper links working. I thought about it rather as an inconvenience, not a serious problem - which it seems to be.

Scellanis In reply to pawelabrams [2011-11-01 20:28:07 +0000 UTC]
Yeah it was a huge problem when I realised what it did and then I had to convince all of my members to go back and check all their entries since the last update to make sure all the stock links worked and didn't just lead to my group front page. Lucky I kept a faves folder of the stock we were using. I suspect there must be lots of people out there just using stock on their own who have not noticed yet.
At least if there was a button then it would be easy for me to explain what they need to do, I could just tell them to use that instead of having to explain how to get a clean link.

I'd like something similar - the option to turn off that transition completely (along with the warning for external links). I have a habit of opening a gallery and then use presses on the scroll wheel to open interesting entries in background tabs. So all this smoother optical transition does for me is produce a couple of weird links from time to time and I have to change them back so my friends can load them without loading the gallery previews in the background so their browser can do a quick transition.
It's not a big deal, but even a small step in the inconvenient direction just seems so... unnecessary for me.
Anyway, good look with this suggestion, I personally doubt it's gonna get through. Tons of awesome suggestions, whole bunch of them only small, but useful twists in the code, but dA seems to be focusing on designing their own shiny features that are better at gaining subscribers. Seriously, just look at how they blow up the "set to private" feature, including a submission process and general graphical overhaul.

An option to turn this off would save me hours as I tend to open everything in a new tab, as you do. And even if I disagree about the external link thingy (it shows the proper address of the site so user knows where are they going), I think that if you want to disable it, you should be given an option to do this.

MarikBentusi In reply to pawelabrams [2011-11-01 20:25:24 +0000 UTC]
Well I simply hover a bit over links to display their target URL in my browser (either in a corner of the GUI or in a small popup next to my cursor). Old habit from the days where people hid links to "You have been bitten by 👍: 0 ⏩: 1
So while that feature is certainly of used and I would have no problem with enabling it by default, it can get pretty tedious if you try to open a bunch of wips or sketches someone hosts on their Dropbox or something.
