Redirect to original
Description
For a few months a system on dA allows us to view e.g. other deviations of the same gallery without needing to refresh the whole page. That might be a bit faster, and be more pleasant to eye (without that white blink when the page starts loading), but has a big impact on bookmarking or copy-pasting the URL shown in the address bar when we want to show someone a particular deviation. In such case, having clicked on the link or the bookmark, the user downloads the first page on which he landed to view the deviation (e.g. gallery, other work of the same artist, category), and then the deviation itself is loaded.I know the textbox with similar facility is hidden in the Share menu, but it isn't good for bookmarking either. One must copy the address in the "Link" section, paste it in their sidebar and then bookmark it. Or click the title to be redirected to static version of the deviation page.
The other way out is to include a line in page's header:
which might be good for bookmarks. This way users would still need to drop-down the Share menu to let someone know about the deviation in a more efficient way.
PS. Excuse me for my interpretation of permalink icon. I'm not a good pixel artist.
Ed. Thank you so much for the Daily Deviation! I hope this helps and dA deviations' pages would get the Permalink button (or the fav.me alias link more exposed).

I think a bigger problem is when viewing large art pieces, you can't scroll with the arrow keys without changing pictures.

That's a lot of a problem for me, too! I browse dA on my laptop and usually use keyboard to navigate.

Although I like the visual design of this , you can click on the deviation title to bring you to the actual page of the deviation instead of a redirect or whatever it is from the message center. Then the link in the URL IS a permalink that's not the fav.me link.

Yeah I hate the fact they didn't made it more noticeable. I think your idea could be combined with the already existing short URL method.

brandimillerart In reply to pawelabrams [2011-11-01 23:52:30 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I read your artist comments. I was just replying to that other comment because I agreed. No offense intended.
And you actually don't have to click "share" like you said in your artist comments. It can also be found under "Details". I think with it already being in two places it doesn't really need to be changed. I suppose if enough people can't find it, maybe they will change it, though, and that's good.
I also hardly think you're a beginner. It says you've been on the site for 3 years.
That being said, I'm glad you're helping out by adding suggestions. I was merely adding my own thoughts.

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to say I was offended of sorts ;D
Yeah, I'm not a beginner, but I'm surrounded by my friends who have just started exploring deviantArt - and they share a lot of links with me. It's confusing when they send you a link, which after clicking displays one deviation and then - blink! - a second one.
Thanks for sharing your ideas

Yeah, I can see how that would get confusing. And you're right that this might help fix that!
No problem. Thank you for sharing yours!

GREAT solution to this- at this point, people still send me links to specific dA pictures with the hashtag URL because they can't find the permalink, which might be more efficient when you're already browsing in-site, but getting redirected from another page, it takes AGES to load (and sometimes won't at all- ever get the "Sorry, there was a problem loading this deviation- please go to the deviation page" error? The sheer amount of times I've seen that... XP). This would be a nice, elegant way to display the actual URLs without being forced to actually reload the page. I hope they implement it!

Actually, deviantART could just change the pushState URL to the proper deviation URL. When there's an actual URL for the page you're on, using hashtag loading with AJAX is really not necessary.

pawelabrams In reply to Fxy [2011-11-01 13:00:56 +0000 UTC]
To tell the truth, I'm just beginning my adventure with AJAX techniques, but that might be an answer. Thanks!

Fxy In reply to pawelabrams [2011-11-01 20:25:27 +0000 UTC]
I looked into it and found that dA doesn't actually use pushState, but rather change the hash tag and check it constantly (which is... just dumb).
You could make a userscript with the following code to make all deviations load into their proper URL:
for(var a=$('a.thumb'),b=0,c=a.length;b
pawelabrams In reply to Fxy [2011-11-01 20:50:19 +0000 UTC]
D-do wh-what? *chuckles*
So that's why sometimes it takes time to switch between 20 deviantART tabs
Anyway, now I see what you did here. It might be a very handy userscript, deserving for a DD itself!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Fxy In reply to pawelabrams [2011-11-02 00:33:40 +0000 UTC]
Well deviantART doesn't practice consistency. It appears that it won't work on some links. I'm also not willing to play with dA's mess of a code to make something better.
Also I assume there are many other reasons you'd lag with 20 tabs open. Timeouts are relatively easy to handle compared to some of the stuff dA jams into its JS.
