" It used to be a holiday of merryment and spending time with your family"
People define merryment with different things; some people define it by giving gifts or doing special occassions with their family.

I hear ya. It drains bank accounts, sends people into credit card debt (been there myself) and causes alot of stress to many. If done wrong.
Do people actually get butthurt if you don't get them something expensive...or anything at all? All my friends and family know I love them...we all stopped giving/receiving gifts a long time ago for Christmas. We give at random times cause we feel like it, not because the calendar says to. Giving is a choice, not a requirement. Our new house is our Christmas present to ourselves for years to come. Nowadays we can't get what others want cause they go out and get it themselves when they want it. Ended up just passing cards with money in them.
STORES: Money! We don't care if you sell all your blood to pay us! Just give us your MOOOONNNNEY!
Christ may be the reason for the season but that's the overtone we feel. (goes for Hanukah and Kwaanza too I guess.)

Thanks. I was hoping not to offend anyone. But it's been just my observation.

As Tom Lehrer put it:

Well, it's like this. Because the economy has slowed down considerably, retailers are having to hype Christmas no end to make up for lost profits.
This really has been going on for a long, long time now; even before I was born, there was this kind of backlash against Christmas hype. Dr. Seuss wrote "How the Grinch Stole Chirstmas" in 1957 as a warning against overhyping the holiday.
So long as one person remembers that we celebrate it as an arbitrary date for Christ's birthday, the true spirit of Christmas will never be lost.
