Description
Whoo! My hand hurts! This dragon isn't the best thing I've ever drawn, but it means a lot to me. This dragon is a portrait... My friend and I really saw these! A few weeks ago, there was a horrific electrical storm. A baby storm (Which was still pretty cool) came in the evening, but the real monster came at a wee hour of the morning. The thunder and lightning woke us out of bed, and we sat under the garage overhang and watched. It lasted for hours and hours! Lightning everywhere! I have never seen so much!Every great now and then, a special bolt would flash, going not vertically but horizontally! These few rumbled from one side of our peripheral vision to the other, as if alive, leading the rest of the bolts on their journey northward. Those bolts... Were DRAGONS! Dragons of lightning. After a while, it finally calmed down enough for us to go back to bed, and it was a nice, temperate day when we awoke. Almost as if it was a dream...
Here I have attempted to capture the beauty of one such dragon... But, it didn't come out as planned. I wish that I had made it more randomly zigzagged, like the lightning bodies of the ones we saw. But, no, I just HAD to make it round!
Okay, I did this COMPLETELY FREEHAND, MEANING NO SKETCH! Good for me! No outlines, either. And, as usual, it was done with Prismacolor pencils. The style was inspired by the work of !

Thanks for peeping in on my work! I press down so hard on the pencils... The fewer colors I use, the more my hand aches! And I only used two colors on the sky and two on the clouds for this one.

The best way to color is to start off light and layer it on gradually. You're obviously younger than me and believe me you don't want to injure yourself when you're at your best in drawing pics.

Start off light? I work best starting from dark, I've found. Dark to light. It helps me shade. I know my shading could definitely stand to improve, but it looks worse when I try it the other way.

I think you did a wonderful job showing the way the lightning "glows." As a kid, I liked to imagine such lightning strikes as dragons-- darting from cloud to cloud, racing each other through the thunderhead... This brought back some great memories!
I know what you mean by wishing it were more angular-- but as it is, it's fine. It's colorful, lovely, and imaginative-- a wonderful job through and through!

GLOWY!!! You got the glowy-ness looking awesome
And you managed to keep the yellow from melting in to one big single colour blob, it's all very well seperated into it's parts, without actually emphasising the outline too much, so it dosen't stand out, like if you had used black or something. I don't know about you, but I know what I'm trying to say
Heh, we had a nice large storm just last night, actually. Couldn't see any of the lightning, though. Our house is surrounded on all sides by hills. Just really bright sky flashes... still looked pretty cool though. I love lightning storms
Heh, all this lightning talk remindees me of something that I'm going to tell you weather you like it or not! It's been a long day.
I was over to this friend house, and it started storming quite severely, so we did the lightning ritual or unplugging everything, so it doesn't fry, you know. Then, we were just sitting there, watching the storm, because with everything unplugged there wasn't much to do, and someone decided we should go out onto the porch and watch the lightning. Their house is on top of this nice big hill, so we had an aweosme view of the lightning over the horizon...
Anyway, were sitting there watching the lightning, pretty uneventful, though very cool, when not more then 20 feet from the house, lightning splits a huge tree right down the middle! I mean, we were right beside this bolt of lightning! It hit so close I could FEEL it. We were outside on the porch, and right beside me a tree gets exploded. That was mcuh fun Anyway, I'm leaveing now.

Oh, cool! I wish I could have been to close to a lightning strike! A bolt destroyed a tree near us when I was about eight, but I was only close enough to hear the sound and smell the burning, not FEEL it. I'm jealous now...
Actually, I think I do know what you're trying to say. Yellow is HARD to shade, and difficult to make stand out without outlines. And you know me- I'm the outline queen! It think it's because there are so few shades of yellow before it isn't yellow anymore. There are bazillions of oranges, greens, purples, blues, pinks... Red is another that is hard, because there are so few shades of actual red. I avoided red like the plague! I wanted to stay away from a firey look. So, I used a lot of white and just a touch of orange.
So thank-! Damn! I hate that ice cream truck! I wish it would DIE! ...Let me explain. We don't have normal phones at this house. We have cell phones, each with a constantly changing ring tone. When one rings, I run down stairs and answer it, because I'm home alone a lot. And, that blasted ice cream truck sounds just like a cell phone from upstairs! I hate running down the stairs just to find that it's just that ICE CREAM TRUCK! I don't even like ice cream! So, running down the stairs for no reason is what I just did. I would scatter tacks in the street if my Mom wouldn't drive through them, too! ...In my new car. Mint green Chrystler Syrus, baby! Oh yeah, thanks for the input!

Funky! It's dancing... and stuff. I can't remember seeing a dragon from you before (I'm sure you have others, my memory is probably at fault).
I don't think it looks bad being rounded. It's still got its little jaggy bits, and I like that it's yellow. It conveys heat, and isn't yellow supposed to be a traditional air element colour? @_@
Nice job with the night sky, too. The only thing I think could be improved is the composition; it looks a tad cramped to me. However, the dragon is hardly feeling constricted- look at the way it dances! Yeah! Dance! >

Peachfuzz In reply to donnaquinn [2005-06-14 02:46:59 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, Donna! I wanted to stay away from red completely (Too much like fire), but I couldn't avoid a little orange to make it stand out. I stuck mostly with yellow and white, and tried my best to give it a lightning look. I think you're right- I've played games and read books where yellow was the color for air. Sometimes, green is used, though... Anyway, cramped? Would fewer clouds have helped? I thought it would look boring with too much open sky. I do think about distribution when planning my drawings, so this concerns me.
It is kinda dancing, isn't it?

I meant that the dragon seemed to be almost touching the edges at all sides. The clouds looked great. But don't be concerned, you have a nifty sense of composition. I mean, you managed to pull off placing a vine smack bang through the middle of a picture, and made it work!
And yeah, the dancing is palpable.
