Description
A gift for my good friend ~Nekomarunosuke of his sparrow character, Kureha. It's also another piece for my 10 Anthro Challenge. Yep, my very first avian anthro!I used *robertsloan2 's How to Draw a Bird's Wing tutorial to help with the wings. I still have a long way to go with both wings and feathers, but this is my best attempt yet! Kureha is a sparrow, so I figured her wings would be pretty small. I doubt she'd fly too well but I imagine she'd jump and glide way better than other creatures for having them.
This thing took so long to ink. T__T I think this is my most time-consuming piece so far. Even coloring took way longer than usual. I suck at water and rocks, but I like the cherry blossoms. Definitely won't be trying that texture on rocks again!
Sakura Pigma Microns, Staedtler Triplus Fineliners, Col-Erase colored pencils (sketching only), Prismacolor markers.

I love the rocks in the water, I know you said you weren't massively chuffed with the rocks, but the rocks in the water are such a pretty colour and look lovely. In fact, all the colours are nice. Even the duller browns on the anthro are beautifully rich and choclately. And the scaled legs look great, and the cherry blossoms are very very pretty and well-done. I like the petal floating on the water!

Awesome work! I love the way you did the legs. And the scales on the legs... aww... beautiful. Good job. You are way ahead of me on the anthro challenge.

Thanks so much. I thought long and hard about how I was going to depict the bird anatomy in anthro form, so it's nice to hear that I didn't do too badly.
That's the beauty of the 10 Anthro Challenge, though. We can go as slow as we want!

You probably shouldn't have inked the waterfall. It reminds me of a split Articuno's tail. The eyes also too close of a brown color compared to the brown around it. It's more noticeable in the preview if you look. The transparency effects are lovely. The amount of detail astounds me.

Ah, thank you for the detailed input. I wasn't sure what to do about the eyes, since they're the same color as her main feathers as the original creator has designed her. Do you think a lighter highlight and perhaps darker shading would help distinguish the eyes from the feathers? More contrast?
It does look very much like an Articuno tail, now that you mention it! Bwaha, I hadn't even though of that.

The eyes could have been green, blue, or even yellow instead of brown. Anthro sparrows don't exist, so it's eyes color doesn't need to be.

You're right, anthro sparrows don't exist. But this is a person's character with a set design, that I had to respect when drawing her. Changing the eyes "just because" would be like me drawing your Azure... Yellow or something, because I don't like the color blue.

oh sorry, I must have misunderstood it was someone else's character.
I looked up th character and saw the eyes in this are a darker brown, or at least look it. [link]
I'd make the eyes darker in general.

You keep mentioning how you suck at water. I notice that you don't use highlights on it. Water is highly reflective, so you might wish to consider ways of adding a bit of white or off-white blue/greens to it, or possibly pale pink... all of those if nothing is directly over the water and casting a reflection.
With THIS one... you should have pinks and grays reflected in this. A few sheening sparks of it in the waterfall, but far more of them in the pool. The tree on the left is likely to "cover" almost half of the pool's reflective surface, and perhaps a quarter of it by the one on the right. From our angle, there MIGHT be a very small area, such as what shows between her legs, that shows some reflection of the girl. Perhaps with colored pencils on top you could pull this off? It's just a suggestion. I have six of your images I just looked at, and in each of the ones with water, you say you hate how it turned out.

Peachfuzz In reply to Catgoyle [2008-02-08 02:40:45 +0000 UTC]
Ah, good point. I could easily have mixed pinks into the blue for reflections of the blossoms if only I'd thought to. Good point about the highights, too. I've got to start being smarter about drawing water.
Thank you for all of your wonderful comments. I really appreciate them.

(snugs!) I only give you so many detailed comments because you =do= like them and respond to them. If you didn't respond to them (letting me know they are welcome), I would keep more of my opinions to myself.
Sometimes it takes an outsider's opinion on what we're doing to point out what we're missing. My mother-in-law took up art after we met. Something about how she said she could never do what I do and me telling her it's a skill, and one that anyone can learn. (chuckles) One day I came over to her place and she showed me a still life she'd done. Not my cup of tea, but it was fairly well rendered. She wasn't happy with it, saying that she didn't know why it looked wrong, only that it did. This was a subtle request, and I spotted it instantly. "These items all at one angle, while this bottle is at another, almost as if it's laying flat." Once it was pointed out, she couldn't believe she'd missed this.
You =always= ask for advice, and you always mean it. That's why you get so many people to respond and give you advice, including from me.

Wow, now that's a compliment! I was such a toad about critical input when I first joined DA back in 2004, that it's nice to hear that I've changed my attitude as much as I've changed my art. Of course, the change in attitude definitely helped with changing the art.
I'd still be drawing terrible proportions, arms wrongly attached to torsos, misplaced eyes, all without any shading, just like I was back then without all of the awesome input I get from people on this site like you!
I've had a lot of those "eureka comments" just like the one you explained with your mother-in-law and the bottle at an incorrect angle. Something is bugging me and bugging me but I can't put my finger on it, and then someone comes along and leaves a great comment pointing out what's wrong with it and why. That's exactly the thing we artists need sometimes, isn't it? Hahaha, like when this one torso was really bothering me back in 2005, and somebody finally made me realize that I'd drawn the character's breasts off-center. So seemingly obvious, but I'm not sure I'd ever have figured it out without that comment.

I'm going to try to critique the bird here, I've always wondered about doing bird anatomy for the anthro challegne (have yet to do that, the list isn't finished) and this is actually pretty interesting for one.
As for sparrows, I should know, all my life I have lived in a neighborhood or in a house where they usually congregate and they can be noisy and they fight alot, I have no idea if anyone else has had an experience with sparrows like that.
As for the overall picture, I really find myself liking the cherry blossoms alot, perhaps because of the color. The water in the pond beneath the waterfall is actually transparent! I like that detail. You really went into the details, even showing the ridges in the feathers on her wings.

Thanks a ton. Water is really hard for me, so that's nice to hear. I can do transparency easily with markers, and I'm glad to hear that it worked well on the water.

What a lovely first-time birdy!
As far as water goes, I think the waterfall in the back ended up looking more like fabric. Maybe it would look a little more watery if you had a little bit of white water in it, you know? I also think her arms look a little muscular, but maybe that's just the way her character is meant to be? (That is a very heroic kind of pose there.
) I really love her feathers--my God, Peach, you put so much work in there. I wish I could seethe original.
I also love her legs, the rocks through the water along the river bottom, and the little cherry petal on the surface of the water. I think it would've been great if you'd had a few more cherry blossoms floating down away from the trees. Maybe next time, eh?
Great job.

You're so right, I wish I'd put in more floating petals! It was something I thought of kinda last second, after pretty much all of the rest of the water had ripple marks or underwater rocks. XD Good idea, too late.
Thanks so much for the awesome comment. Apparently I fail at waterfalls.
You're far from the first to point that one out. Thank you for the specific tip for making it better! It does look like fabric without any frothy bits or white water.

Well, you're welcome. Nah, you just need to draw more of them is all! I swear, Peach, I see you improve with every new drawing. And you're so receptive to comments. I'm sure next time you'll get it perfect.

But the more pen work I do, the easier it is to color since pen details obscure the coloring and make it look solid and smooth no matter how lousy it actually is.

beautiful job as always, Peachfuzz! and this piece is so amazingly detailed, its beautiful! I love the way you inked and colored those cherry blossoms, they are simply stunning! Thanks so much, Skye. You're the first to notice the shines on the water.
My blender was really dead so the shines are Cool Gray 10% as well as what little ink my poor blender had in it. It would have come out better if I had a healthy blender marker, since I really needed the sparkling bright white for this. Any marker will bust up a darker marker's ink, but nothing does it quite as strikingly as the blender.

this art is really stunning art. before you ask me to change some parts. then I guess it's probably the feet, the bird feet is attractive. but this have not only the bird feet, she have bird hands and the winged arms. and the wing tail, I think it's one of the important part. I really love this form and I renotice the attractions of the anthro avian is the wing tail and bird feet.
and I think the cherry blossom, too many blossoms are very fine and I can feel it take much endeavor. the rock and the feathers are also fine. her costume have cherry blossom pattern, it give out the more spring mood and I like it. and I notice a cherry petal falls on the water and make the ripple, I like this effect.
now I'm glad to see this art. it's first time the other people draw my characters in the serious art. thank you very much. I'm really happy.
