Let's go over the obvious first.

Flippy is a bear, he is a male bear! Bears have round ears, often small and located near the head. They can have slightly pointed tips that are tufts of fur or creases, they cannot have flat out triangles because they're not cats!

Flaky is a porcupine! PORCUPINE! It's a aggravating reoccurring mistake that people refer to her as a hedgehog. Especially when the website itself says what Flaky's species is in plain view!

For some they may not know what a porcupine's ears look like, the below links show what their ears look like:

Small, round ears that are normally hidden or covered.
They aren't pointed, no large triangular wedges upon their heads, they are ears like the species should have. Large ears would get in the way far too much, plus they have no use, look misplaced, and make no sense.

As for the overused concept part, it really is overused, even more than making Flippy or Flaky a pony, wolf, or human. It's lazy. If your excuse is you can't draw bears or porcupines then practice! You don't have to be gold from the first image! Even a 'shitty doodle' is better than a ton of cat HTFs to add to the heap!
