Description
Minor Edit September 28 2012 - [link] Just some updated art... but if you want to know whats happened to them roughly since R2 look over here: [link]Digi-Egg of friendship if one doesn't know the canon symbols too well.
In a nutshell:
My character Rei is like a semi-sarcastic, sometimes clueless seeming, easily frustrated, but flippin keeps her word kind of gal. She's pretty cheery when relaxed.
Taz is light-hearted, overly shy to strangers, can't handle being serious too well, and hates being alone. Not the most reliable of lexicons in their digital adventure.
It might be looking a tad chaotic now...
I tried a new method recently. Just cleaning up my sketches more or less, instead of lining them. Tell me what you think!

This time the zombie apocalypse didn't strike I gather? Right now I'm trying to just clean up sketches and not over blend my colors to make them too too drab.
I still worry a bit if this is all alright, as I see everyone else's references are pretty different being split. Part of me really likes it, but another is worried about how whether the information is enough to be displayed and if it is organised enough.
Thank you for stopping by! Sorry for the worry-dump I seem to be doing... Antsy a bit.

^_^ b That was my nefarious plan all along. Muhaha- a hem.
Couldn't resist being silly.
Heh I just wanted a simple to draw little guy, but challenged myself to make him a bug since I don't like them too much either. Most of the digimon bugs are really complicated to draw, and there are only a few of them. I had this little guy in mind for two-three years, but only now finalized him with some color help from my friend latiaslord.
Thanks for stopping by!

Oh noes!! What will be next?? Will I have a spider pet?
Hey that's sounds like a good idea, I should try to design a bug digimon line some day :>

[link] No, but you can have Shonen Spiders.
....Seriously.
The comic is a bit hard to read with the painterly style when it get to the spider part 20 pages in, but hilarious at times.
Heh go for it! I'd like to see more buggy digimon love! Even DA is sparse for original designs.

I never actually had much of an idea in mind. Though before the tournament she was in NYC looking for someone... Did I have to add that too? Looking at my app and comparing it to others, I feel like I missed a lot like having split apps and labeling everything correctly.

Nah, it's fine, I just like finding out where they are from. The internationality of digimon is something I always liked.

Ah! Well I'm kind of an "ignorant american" I guess. XD I've been to Europe, but I don't really know too many places outside of the area I live in. So I figure I'd use roughly the places I do know for how I generally think of backdrops. I know her name is probably pretty odd, it's more nostalgia and pun factor in a sense.
Heh Digimon was pretty cool in that regard with the second season where they went all around the world.
Does the App look ok? I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, or if it's too cluttered and unorganized.

No you are not an ignorant for being american. There are too many people who have never even met americans and believe that stereotype.
There's nothing wrong with using local backdrops, after all those are the places we know the best. Reika is an odd name, but not the strangest thing someone has been named. After all, a friend of mine is the aunt to 2 adorable little red-head Japanese boys with Macfarland for a last name.
Your ref is fine.
From it I see the tamer's name, age, gender, height, body type, attire and personal style, background and personality. Based on that, I know what sort of characteristics of hers I could use to create a comic for the round that has her in character, and how she would relate to Tazramon and to my team.
For Tazramon, I see 4 stages of digivolution for him and how they all compare by height to Reika. All the attacks are written AND described. His personality is described and the digiegg is shown. I can use all that, there's no worries.

I had a whole reply written out, but it didn't go through. I'll probably be missing or messing up on points as I try to recover them.
But thank you so much for writing such a vast and coherent reply. I'm not sure if my answers are very full filling or anything, but here goes.
I meant it as a joke in a sense, I don't make the best ideas for a form of comedy, but I can see why it is a touchy subject. There is no stereotype that can represent a nation or a people, because everyone is so different. I think people just try and create these cliques to try and understand each other. They don't always work, especially if a person doesn't take the time to learn about a people or culture and why these stereotypes pervade.
Which brings me to my narrow idea for backdrops in this case, I don't know much beyond my experiences, so I don't feel comfortable relegating ideas beyond them. It takes research, and not just a small amount, to help make things more true to how it is...I think. I'm not too great at crafting stories.
That being said, I chose Reika for nostalgia purposes. I used to have a digimon character named Rikka, so I sort of pulled the name from there. Plus I liked the nickname "Rei" so I just added a bit more to it. Digimon has always had some odd name changes to appeal to outside demographics, heck a lot of my childhood shows had. So in a way that all carried over to today in my mind. Heh, remember when you couldn't have or say rice balls in some of the early anime that got here?
Hmm...I was really happy with making the design for it, letting it evolve as I worked on it. Though I worried it was too cluttered or had to be split-up like everyone else's. I never made a reference sheet, well one like this before.
Though my largest worry is if the information can get across how my characters are despite the scarcity. The last OCT I was in, my opponent complained about the scarcity and I've come to regret my attempt to "fill it out" more.
I'm glad you are able to get an idea of my characters, that's what makes me really happy. It might need to be a bit better organized, but I'm glad I'm somewhere on the right track.
I'll have to decide if I want to make changes or try my luck as thus with the judges.
Thank you again! I'll keep your words in consideration.
(Clicked one of those...smiley things by accident this time. XD)

Eh, that particular stereotype bugs me because as an american who does travel overseas a lot, I'm the one that's gotten the bad end of it. And I misinterpreted what you wrote, if only there was a sarcasm font! The internet would make so much more sense then.
It's not so bad using a place you have yet to go to, the research is a lot of fun. My TDC digidestined Masadur is Egyptian, from the outskirts of Cairo. I don't remember exactly why I picked Egypt, but around that time I had found a couple of blogs of people living in Egypt (this one is fascinating, though she has since moved. Take a look, especially at the photographs! [link] ), and their descriptions and photography gave me a fairly good understanding of the modern Egypt. I suppose the best thing is just to do a bit of research first, find out a little and start there. Some really useful things to find out are what that place's connection to the rest of the world is (i.e. Cairo is THE media center of the Middle East) or a bit of their history (less rattling off a list of kings and more finding out what the people did or didn't do in terms of war or trade or spreading/adopting a religion, etc. i.e. the Thai people are Southeast Asian, but their architecture, food and religion has a lot of connections to India). If you can find out what that culture doesn't do (i.e. hindus do not eat beef, the chinese will not disturb ancient ruins or tombs, muslims don't drink alcohol, etc.) that's usually quite useful.
The most important thing is, don't be afraid to change it when you learn something new about that place or culture. After a certain point most of the changes are more like small details falling into place than the need to dramatically change backstory.
Ah yes, I remember when english-dubbed anime called rice balls jelly donuts. Which was your last OCT?

Yeah I understand you. My Mom's cousin one time visited portugal and wanted to buy some bread. Now he knows portuguese and english full and well, but heard about people in Europe trying to take advantage of tourists who didn't know the native languages. He watched a transaction take place with a woman selling bread and a local person to see the price. Then he ordered the same amount of bread, all in halting and unsure sounding english. When it came time to pay, he held out a stack of bills and said "take, take!" The woman began to take the bills one by one, not stopping and going well beyond what the person before had paid. That was when my mom's cousin stopped her, and asked her in portuguese why she would do that. The woman was so surprised that she gave back all the money and took the correct sum. He warned her though that if tourists were treated this way, eventually no one would want to come to Europe.
A sarcasm font would be so helpful, though still a bit difficult as written language is different in a sense.
There's so much to read! I'll definitely check this out as it can only help me to better understand, I just wish the blog format was a little easier to understand the navigation. There aren't very many arrows, and I feel there are many more posts than the ones shown on the front page, but I'll have ot look into that. The life of a diplomat, or living with one must be interesting. You get to see so many places and learn a little bit about them each time you live or visit a place. I never knew Cairo was that important for the middle east, though its position in the world is a very good one for that. I much prefer learning why some things like religion spread, or how kingdoms learned to adapt to the constant changes in diplomacy from empires and other factors. And the little facts you gave about some of the general customs of people are interesting. I know in India there was some trouble getting fast food chains started up from bovines being sacred. I did not know anything else about the others.
So much to learn, and so little time to grasp it all! Life is so wonderful.
[link] Seeing that blog brought this to mind, though obviously this is a bit different with things like spirits and humanity fighting them. But the person who draws this bases many settings and events on the land she loves. I love it when stories can translate and let us touch a culture if only for a moment.
My last oct ended only a short while ago, Big Sky Carnival. I was feeling really sick though to finish a spectator entry, and not very satisfied with my characters then. I feel like I learned a lot doing it though, but I just didn't have the heart with all that was going on to finish.... Part of me feels like a hypocrite for trying to join this OCT so soon. Perhaps I should lie low for a little and think or rest. But there's another part of me that wants to keep moving and try with a fresh start. It's a rather odd conflicting notion.

Yeah, I read Malaak! Takes a while to get into, but it's a pretty satisfying concept if you like the complexity of the backstory. Plus, Lebanon is quite a beautiful and fascinating place, but it has suffered so much more for being an intersection of cultures than any other part of the Middle East.
In a much, much more minor way I can sympathize with `Cedarseed , watching a place that's loved be torn apart from within, and I appreciate the way she hasn't glossed over the horrors, but it framing it in the brighter light of the side of life there we don't see on the news. You see, I live in the Detroit area, and it may be on hard times with some serious restructuring needed, but believe me it's like a cathedral's rose window that's dark for everyone but the people here who know it's radiance. I've been developing what I plan to make as a webcomic based here, and I'm not kidding when I say I can keep all the settings and backgrounds in Southeast Michigan, the city of Detroit and maybe the occasional jaunt to Windsor, and you would be awestruck at the cool places, ways and people you never knew existed. I have all the ideas, just got to make the rest happen.
Oh, BSC was quite a grand event, wasn't it? There's no shame in joining TDC, you never know if you don't try.

Yes it is a bit slow-paced in some parts in the beginning, but it really helps to set up the people and settings the comic takes place in. There are things that happen that raise questions, and they get answered as the comic progresses. And even more questions keep getting raised even if they don't seem to notify themselves with bright neon lights. A beautiful and diverse town that sees a lot of fighting. It's interesting to see how the people find a normalcy for themselves to live in Lebanon. I'm not sure how to feel about the setting, but it is very interesting and using mythology intertwined with the more realistic happenings creates an interesting slice of life portrayed.
I know a lot of times news tends ot gloss over some facts or sort of portray things as less serious. Or they call one person a tragedy and hundreds a statistic... Humanity can be odd.
Oh! You definitely have a lot of background to use for a comic. It'll be cool to see your insiders take to the place you live in and love, and that's what matters. Outsiders might not understand too well, but you can always find something to love about a place if you look enough. I'm betting you get a lot of diverse people and their stories along as well. I'll be curious to read it should you ever do it! I mostly just stick to fantasy element type stuff, so I realyl like reading more down-to-earth comics from others.
Yeah BSC was crazy! I didn't get past the first round though, and tried spectating for a while, but I was just tired and hit a depression spot. Still not out of it, but right now I'm enjoying TDC and drawing for it, so we'll see what the sign-ups are like.

What about the design? Nothing to say about that?
