Description
Another series of drawings I did some time ago. I wanted to design some characters for the Stone Age society that will appear in my short stories. So I decided to draw 12 professions that I thought were important in a Stone Age community living in the eastern Alps 5300 years ago. To avoid a too crowded picture I finally decided to split the series up into three parts.
So here are my first four Stone Age characters.(second part: fav.me/dc1xc8j )
On the far left is a farmer apparently in the process of sowing something, probably Einkorn or Emmer. The green beads at the bottom of his skirt are a reference to the increased popularity of green jewelry in Neolithic societies (which some archeologist like to connect to agriculture).
Next is a shepherdess with one of her goats. Goats and sheep would have been the most common stock animals of that time period and while I did not base the goat on any real breed I did give it the colors of a wild Chamois. I gave my shepherdess a backpack and a birch bark container for transporting ember as well as a dagger for self-defense (all of these things are based on the equipment found with Ötzi).
Next is a spinner with a ceramic spindle. Since she is working with textiles all day I decided to draw her in finer clothing with a rich variety of patters. Since she would probably be working somewhere in the shade or indoors I gave her a lighter complexion.
And finally on the right is a potter showing of her newest creation. The pottery I gave her are all from different cultures of the eastern Alps from roughly the right time frame. The jug she is holding is from the Mondsee culture (which does play an important part in the story) the brown cup at her feet is from the Badener culture and the lighter vase in the back is from the Corded Ware culture (which technically is a little too late for the setting...).
The next drawing will include a musician, a priestess, a tool maker and another farmer.

The beaded fringe on the farmer's tunic reminds me of a culture in one of my books, one of whose distinctive features is beaded tassels on their clothes. I was in fact inspired by descriptions of Neolithic clothing in Elizabeth Wayland Barber's Women's Work, though the culture in my book is transitioning from Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age.

A query for you: where might one find more information on the cultures Mondsee and Badener that you listed above? I admit I am rather eager to learn more about them...

I am glad you are interested in these cultures! Most literature in in german I fear, but I found these rather interesting papers on the copper production www.researchgate.net/publicati…
www.geooek.uni-bayreuth.de/geo…
This book also contains information on the Mondsee group: books.google.at/books?id=E_9-A…
And here is a paper on the Baden Culture: homepage.univie.ac.at/Peter.St…
I will let you know if I find any additional information!

I love how real and alive your Stone Age characters look--not at all like most stiff, sterile anthropological reconstructions.

Excuse me, but she next to the goat, what is it she has over her foot? Is it a form of a tattoo?

Yes, its a tatoo - like the ones found on the body of Ötzi, they are believed to be of medicinal purpose

Okay, by the way, have you heard of a book called Bjørneklo? It is about the Iron Age.
