Description
My second collection of Stone age characters. Find the first part here: fav.me/dbzyian
On the left is a musician. I gave him two different musical instruments, a musical bow which is still used today in south Africa but was widespread in the stone age on several continents. The second instrument I gave him is the ocarina he wears around his neck. It was based on the findings of Brunn am Gebirge in Austria where several of these ceramic ocarinas have been found. I decided to give him some ocher body paint to indicate that he plays his music in some kind of religious setting.
Next is a priestess. Again, lots of ocher – stone age peoples favorite color. Her dress bears the Mondsee sun and the statue she is holding is based on the Venus von Falkenstein in Lower Austria. I did create a fictional religion for the Neolithic characters in my story and I really tried to avoid both the Pocahontas style animism as well as the feminist great mother goddess often found in stone age settings.
Next is a tool maker. He apparently just finished a stone axe made from Serpentine which was one of the most popular materials for sanded stone tools.
And finally, another farmer, this time in the process of harvesting his Einkorn. The way he wears his cape over his head is one-way archaeologists interpret the mat Ötzi the Iceman carried with him.
The next drawing will include two clan leaders, a prospector and a miner.

For the Neolithic I can recomend looking at the Venus figurines of the time and the pottery for pattern and designs (I went with the patterns of the Mondsee culture). Take a look at these illustrations: www.anthropark.wz.cz/mmka.htm

Of course, there is always artistic license involved... and there will always people who disagree with your choices

Until now I had heard of the color "ochre" but never bothered to figure out what it was a shade of.
For some reason, when I was little, I imagined it being a greyish-green. Just because it sounds like "ogre".

Yeah, for me it was kind of the same, I always imagined "Ochre" to be just the name of the mineral... and not the colour

What other cults were popular in these prehistoric times? Apart from respecting animals or worship Gaia-like entities.

For my fictional Stone Age culture I used the model of the "Culture hero" - the worship of bringers of certain technological/cultural innovations. In my story the focuse is very strongly on the invention of metal work.
