Technically, the network I believe wanted to focus on the show's version of Batgirl, so Yin got the ax. I did like her a lot, and I find it ridiculous to make her disappear after season 2. I think she had potential but it was at the end wasted... oh well.

It was Ming-Na (also credited as Ming-Na Wen). Chun Li in the Van Damme Streetfighter from the 90s, not the more recent Chun Li.

You know you're in trouble when the Van Damme one is the "good" one...

Yeah only Raul Julia slightly saves it
Now Chun Li might have been saved if they had managed to work in that scene from the animated movie lol

you may say she has Mulan's voice actress, but she will always be Live-Action Chun-Li from the 'good' crappy Street Fighter Movie to me.

If you ignore how the movie doesn't follow the game it's based on it's as good as most other action movies of the time, which can't be said of oh, say, Mortal Kombat...

Really the problem I had with it was no Ibuki.

I love the VanDame Street Fighter, that's why I called it the 'good crappy Street Fighter' the 2009 Street Fighter THAT's the shitty crappy Street Fighter.

... but if we're allowed to point out it's flaws for not knowing about characters from the future it also lacks Dan (who should have just wandered around and yelled "Oh! SNAP!" or "You Go girl!" after every memorable line) and got Charlie's lastname wrong.

You mean the one with Lana Lang as Chun Li? yeah, that was just... confusing. I like the Van Damme one, it's got Australian Cammy (when I first saw it I didn't realize T Hawk was in it until they address him by name right before the final fight scene). It's miles better than the somewhat more accurate Saturday morning cartoon...

...which also didn't have any Ibuki.

it might not have Ibuki (or Dan) but its Liu Kang as Gen though which at least means he gets the full hat trick of awful fighting game movies on his resume (he's in DOAead or Alive as well... doesn't look like he's in Tekken though, shame. Although Shang Tsung is Heihachi... that's pretty awesome.)

Liu Kang is in the bad Street Fighter movie though, not the good one... it makes sense though, since Hollywood has a very limited number of Asian actors, and is hesitant to find more when they really should - the not quite Chinese Chun Li, Devon Aoki as a boob ninja, Christopher Lambert as a Japanese god and John Wayne as Genghis Khan for instance - so there's a lot of "hey it's that guy" when you see Robin Shou, or Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa.

They should totally mention it in character: good guys try a typical good guy ploy and it fails, and Heihachi Mishima says "Nice try, but I fell for that one when I was Shang Tsung, I'm not going to do it again."

and Hollywood's lack of asian actors brings us full circle to Ming-Na (Wen) and Mulan in which like 90% of the voice actors are JAPANESE. Which I guess is no different then say an English Actor playing an American, but still... Jackie Chan had time to record in Chinese but not in English?

It's much like Zhang Ziyi in memoirs of a geisha (or, for that matter, most Chinese movies that have Japanese people in them). Although it's much like having an Englishman play a Frenchman, it may or may not work depending on how typically English they look.

Certainly better than Sean Connery's "Japanese" disguise in You Only Live Twice, in any case.

That...is awesome! I love it! Honestly I've been anxiously waiting your entry since you seemed to excited to do one. I can say this pic was defintiely well worth the wait! It's a prefect representation of Yin.

Love the bulletpoof vest over her normal T-shirt, love the background graffiti there and of course I love the use of a real gun. Looks so much better than the laser they had to give her for the show. The little peak of middrift doesn't hurt either. Heh.

All in all this is just an amazing piece and it's an honor to have it in the jam. I'll add it to the list right away!

Thanks! I was hoping to do a more adult one as well, but I may or may not have time (started a new job this week).

I thought I'd make her look more policey than usual, that being the point of her character and all. And you've gotta have real guns, that's one of the many things that made Batman TAS so awesome.

Blackbird2 In reply to penguin-commando [2010-02-26 21:16:32 +0000 UTC]

I can certainly understand if work's keeping you busy, especially a new job and all but if you do get the time to do a more adult one I'd be more than happy to add it to the list as well. Plus it'd just be fun to see. Yes, yes.

Yeah that was part of it. Never understood how TAS and Gargoyles were able to get away with real guns. Definitely can't do that nowadays. Stupid overreactive parent types.

Well, not if they don't make a STV Mulan movie and a Kingdom Hearts tie-in which occupies her voice actor (although in Batman TAS Montoya shows up plenty of times in the background without saying anything, and had two actresses during the show's run...)
