“Harvey, Harvey,” Applejack chuckled, leaning down quickly to grasp the neck of her son’s guitar, halting his strumming. Rainbow Harvest looked up, perplexed, and Applejack couldn’t help but let out another warm laugh. “You’re stressin’ those high notes way too much, your voice is cracking on ‘em.”

“N-no it isn’t!” the foal replied, with an expression of horror.

“Sure is sugar—ya sound like a squeaky wheel!”

“I think he sounds fine, Jackie,” said Rainbow Dash, looking up from where she lay sprawled in a pile of hay, “I mean, kinda like when Aunt Scootaloo sings, but...”

“Hey!” Harvey complained, glaring over his guitar at her. He tossed the instrument roughly from his side, and said: “The song’s too tough, that’s all it is.”

“The song’s not tough,” said Applejack, patting her son’s shoulder, “It’s that you’re not startin’ low enough. You start too high, and then when the high notes come around ya can’t do ‘em right!”

Harvey crossed his arms, and looked away stubbornly.

“There ain’t no reason I should have to sing anyway,” he huffed, “My special talent’s playin’ instruments, nothin’ else!”

“Just playing instruments doesn’t cut it, kiddo,” said Rainbow Dash, “You’ve gotta pull your weight with the backing vocals.”

“If ya actually wanna do anything with that special talent, that is.”

“That’s right, you could always follow in my hoof prints and be a Wonderbolt!”

“And spend every day with old Spitfire barkin’ at ya, doin’ the same flight course over ‘n’ over, oh and Wonderbolts never know when they’ll get time off—“

“Hmph!” Harvey grabbed his guitar off the floor, heaving it into his lap and holding the instrument protectively. “I’m not gonna be a stupid Wonderbolt,” he stated.

“Well then sugarcube,” said Applejack, strumming her own guitar and smiling, “How ‘bout we try that song again, startin’ a little lower this time?”

“No problem,” Harvey replied, firmly, giving the strings a casual retune for emphasis, before looking Applejack in the eye and adding; “Because I’m gonna be a rockstar!”

Haven’t touched on the AppleDash family dynamic much. They’re a competitive, stubborn, picking-on-you-means-I-love-you type of family, and pretty much never stop with gentle to sometimes not-so-gentle ribbing. Rainbow Harvest ended up at least as pigheaded and competitive as his mothers, and a lot worse at understanding how most ponies show affection and encouragement. It’s one of those things that can get him in trouble with his friends, especially his bandmate Stardust, and as a young adult he tries hard to get around it. But the moms and their bab love each other to death, they just show it funny.

And fun fact, Applejack is the one who taught Harvey to play banjo and guitar, as it’s pretty much expected in the Apple family that you be decent at playing something (headcanon). She never expected him to get his cutie mark in it though! Oh and yes, all of my nextgen Apple kids can play one instrument or another. I’ll draw them jamming sometime
