Description Snowball. About 3 years. Male ♂

Poor quality pic taken with cellphone/handphone.
We haven't had access to a camera for many years now, and we kept thinking there's still time to get one. Now we have to live with the regret ... 5 years he was with us, and we have only these 4 cellphone pics, plus several cellphone video-clips.

We never saw this coming.
It was quite a shock as it was so unexpected.
From the moment he started going off his food to the time he died was only a period of several days. We rushed him to hospital, he underwent all sorts of blood tests and scans, but slipped into a comatose state, and died while he was hospitalized. We were reeling from the shock. The bad news kept coming and there didn't seem to be time to process each piece of information before the next one hits.

So many things were going on, I will try and remember enough to record them here, as I understood it ...

The first thing the vet did was to open his mouth and smell his breath, and pronouned that it was probably pancreatitis. Initial palpations further confirmed this as he was sensitive in the pancreas region. He was also jaundiced. Urine and blood tests confirmed he had kidney and liver trouble, and was also diabetic. Because the diabetes onset was so sudden, the vet suspects it is transient diabetes and is due to the pancreatitis. And because the liver and pancreas are in the same region, his liver also was infected.

His diabetes was not 'regular' diabetes that you can just treat with insulin ... it was Diabetic Keto Acidotic (DKA). He was very critical and needed to have his insulin level checked every 2-3 hours. He had to be stabilised before he can he discharged and treated as for regular diabetes. That may take about 6 days, and many in that condition don't make it. The vet clinic was a smallish set-up and didn't have 24-hour/overnight facilities nor the scanning equipment required. So he was referred to a hospital ... I rushed him there in a cab, with the IV needle in his arm and the saline bottle held high in my hand.

At the hospital ... more rounds of tests and scanning by ultra-sound. Prognosis very bad. Confirmed DKA, and this vet was also of the opinion that it was transient diabetes brought on by pancreatitis. The scans also showed one kidney was very small and the other very enlarged. This meant that one kidney probably stopped functioning a long time ago, and the other had compensated by taking on the added load. However, the urine concentration was still not too bad, so kidney trouble was probably not the primary cause of his condition.

After that, things all became one hazy whirl and all I can remember is that by evening time, he had already slipped into a comatose state; but his insulin levels were getting better, so we were still hopeful.

Next morning, just before 8am, got a call from the hospital.
His heart had stopped and they had just revived him ... they await my instructions on what to do if he had another heart-arrest. We requested that they put him down immediately so that he need not suffer anymore as there was no chance of him coming out of this.

A few minutes later, another call from the hospital ... when they went to give him the lethal injection, he was already gone.

Died : 0800 hours, March 12, 2011. Age: almost 8 years.

Here are the other 3 cellphone pics of him ...

Yes, it is But we have to move on ... we have other cats that need us.

hahaha ... now that you have faved my ENTIRE gallery, you already know that I do indeed have alot of cats!! These are mostly old photos, and many of these kitties are already dead and gone. At the moment, we have 17 cats, ranging in age from 13 to 20 years.

My younger sister and I are the two involved in this ... we had been keen on cats/animals since we were young kids, but our family had not been supportive. We did take in a couple of little kittens when we were kids, but it was not a happy experience ... being kids, we didn't have much say in how we wanted to care for our kittens. In the end, we lost both kittens.

It was such an unhappy experience, filled with so much guilt and hopelessness, that we vowed never to take in anymore cats until we have our own place, and we are able to make our own decisions on how we want to care for them.
I guess you can say, we are making up for all those lost years when we didn't have any cats! You are only 15? Nyahhh, plenty of time ahead of you to realize your dream of a kitty shelter!

Wow,epic story :3 Im kinda the same weve always had these stray around our house but weve never been able to keep them, we a had a little dog then, but after he died(hit by a car) a few years or so after my sister was at a firends house who helped strays and she was finnaly able to bring him home, before that id get attached to all the strays around and feed them (thoguh my parents yelled at me constanly not too,) but after since they werent allowed in the house (when my parents were home hehe) they moved on, but anyway since my sister got this stray, (thinking at first it was female) but turned out it was a fixed male that was abandoned, and who we have today, Richard, then after afew years, i came home and saw my sister trying to coax a very young male moggy to eat and let her pat him, again mother and father kelpt shooing him away he was sooo friendly hed purr and sit on you He became my best friend so lovy, and i kelpt feeding him secretly and eventually brought him in the house and he never went off too far, but then my dad got mad and one day wen he went to work he drove the cat wayyy up the road at least a few miles, but then (me really sad ) like 2 days later the little cat was on my deck, and then i told my parents (i bawled sooo much during this time to keep him) and so my dd said "hes practically earned his stay if he came back.." so i got to keep him, he went evreywhere with me too, we went for walks up the road sat in feilds and hed be laying in the shade, best cat in the world, of course riched got along with him sometimes thoguht the kittin loved richard, always ate outta the same dish, but then one day i woke up and yelled for him out the door "Deedee" and no answer, and he always came to my call. and then later that day we went to see come construction site up the road and i saw him on the side of the road..dead i immediatly bawled and we turned around and it was him, all cold and solid only a trickle of blood out of his mouth the rest was unscratched, it was soo saddd, we brought him home and i was so sad and confused i just started digging a grave in my old fort but i was just so weeak from crying (and the ground was really rocky) and then my dad dug a big hole in another spot and burried him, i sat there in the rain (goddamn rain) for 4 hours crying and i promised myself i would take in any kitty or animal i could that needed a home, and then i vistied him evreyday for a few months preety much crying each time, it was awful man he really was my best friend, even whenever i think about i cry (im such a wouss) during that time i also saved a little kiten less then 7 weeks old that id seen in my yard i chased him and chased him days on end (was scared of me) and finnaly one day i got him and fed him so hungry he mistacked my finger for food blodd evreyywhere bit like to my bone it hurt lol,(i scared him away by accident another day and had to run in the really bad rain with no shoes in a forest to get him for little guy) but he also my a like disloacated shoulder so mum said we cant keep him since she thoguht the medical bill would be too much so we have him to a shelter, and they fixed him up, he also was a loving cat so little too, ive seen a picture of him in the paper to be adopted and hes an indoor cat now all big and preety and mother wont lettme take him bakc sinc eit would be infair since our other cats are outdoor, but now i took in another kittin, his mum was astray and was brought in to the vets office and she had kits so a presentation was in and the kittin at 4 weeks came in i was adored by them and eventualy got one my little bouncing of joy Oldolph (Ollie) hes just as lovy as the others and is almost a year now in october, but yeah you were preety devoted as am i and I cant wait for my own home to take em all in and care for them as much as i can :3 I have Richard and Ollie as cats and Bill my hamster and Hugh my goldfish, and there all doing real great :3 And i freak out if somethings wroung and get em fixed up as soon as possible I really love cats lol sorry for the long epic story of my own

ahhh ... no, no, no need to apologise! I love reading about cats/animals, especially when the human's love of the animals is so apparent, such as yours is! It warms my heart to read such stories! Thanks for taking the time to share your personal stories.

But I have one request ...
PLEASE BREAKUP YOUR TEXT INTO PARAGRAPHS!
hehehe ... it's very difficult to read one long paragraph ... especially when I have vision problems like astigmatism.

Hey, please do write and tell me more cat stories when you remember them, ok?

His eyes are incredible <3.

It was a shock as it all happened so suddenly and so quickly. But then ... I'm thinking ... maybe that's better than dying from a long painful fight with a terrible disease like cancer.

Yes, his eyes are incredible ... sad that we don't have a good photo of him that shows their true beauty!

Yes, he was a blue-eyed beauty!
And because he was always so pink, we thought he was in really good health. Plus, he was so big and strong and robust!

Haha ... too bad, he was sterilized/neutered so he didn't leave behind any blue-eyed pink-nosed beautiful little babies!

Yes. We had 6 cats died in 2010, but they were aged 15 to 18, mostly already dealing with kidney problems, so the end was expected. We never saw this coming.

Thanks for words and the thoughts.

Lovely dark blue eyes. My Snowy (female) had the palest of blue, so pale we think maybe she might have been albino or almost full albino? But she didn't seem deaf, and certainly wasn't blind. Snowball was fortunate to have been found by you. I'm sure he had a happy life.

Hi!
I have just updated details on this ...

pergamjee In reply to RainySkyz [2011-05-06 05:31:07 +0000 UTC]

hmm ... haven't seen an albino cat before. According to what I read on the net, true albino cats have pinkish eyes or pale blue ones, and they may be deaf but it's not a certainty. so your snowy may hae been an albino. They are not common though.
