WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CLUE? (The Origins of Dawn Meadows)

“Mr Rodriguez? ...I know that I’m probably the last person you expected to see. If I’m to be honest, I did not think I had the courage to come here. I… certainly have not had the courage to come here for the past year. I’m not sure what I…” the fragile blonde teenager fumbled through her introduction while twisting her fingers in her hands.

“Why would you come here?” Rodriguez’s voice was hoarse, full of shock and confusion, but not unkind.

“I’m in need of answers Mr Rodriguez. I just thought that if anyone could tell me what happened… it would be you,” Dawn tried to look up at him, but it was a challenge that left her eyes weighted to her shoes.

“You know what happened, Miss Meadows. I sabotaged those cables. I made so… when they… when your father… I didn’t know that your mother would be… so that when he was going down, that… you know what I did…” Rodriguez apologetically regaled his actions to the young Meadows girl.

Dawn clenched her jaw, and tried to control the deep breaths in her chest as they threatened to get out of control while she listened to his words. “Yes, I have heard all that Mr Rodriguez. But you worked for my father for 20 years. What I want to know is... WHY!?” the question exploded at the end, surprising even Dawn herself.

Rodriguez opened his eyes wide.

“...Why? ...WHY!? People like the Meadows make me sick! I slave away my whole life watching them rise to the top of their ivory tower, living in lavish wealth, while I toil away in squalor!" The venom was hot on his words, causing Dawn to take a step back, frightened by the sudden ferocity. She watched him, his breath was ragged, chest heaving, eyes wild.

It was terrifying… and… fake. The way he referred to “them” and “their” as though he were speaking about the Meadows family in a detached, almost practiced manner. The phrasing someone would use if they were accidentally caught using a script that had been written and coached by someone else…

“Mr Rodriguez… you were there before I was born… you’ve been there my whole life. You’ve watched me grow up!” Dawn tried to reason with the man before her. Separated by thick metal bars, by terrifying accusations, by a terrible crime… she could not help but believe that something was terribly wrong with this story!

“Please Miss Meadows… stop. Stop this. I sabotaged those-” Rodriguez’s voice took on a sympathetic tone.

“No you didn’t! You wouldn’t do that to my father! Tell me why you are saying these lies! Tell me what REALLY happened! WHO did this!?” Dawn’s emotions got the better of her. Her voice became shrill, shrieking.

Rodriguez paced in his cell, running his hands through his hair. The stress was a physical manifestation upon his body. Turning his head toward Dawn, he muttered.

"You don't mess with a guy like him. If he asks you to do something… you do it!"

"Who?" Dawn asked, her eyes narrowing at the mysterious statement.

"Who!? Are you kidding? You think I'm crazy? You are so naive. Guard! We are done here…"

Dawn opened her mouth to persist, but it was all over so quickly. The keys tumbled in the lock, door rattling open, and the guard retrieved a very paranoid looking Rodriguez.

The clank of the metal door slamming shut caused her to flinch, and she found herself suddenly alone holding on to the string of what was starting to look like a real mystery.

To be continued…

Damn Dawn is a cutie, excellent renders.
Good continuation, very heavy atmosphere and emotions.

Again, guilty of the soap opera level melodrama

BTW we need to discuss options for 'environmental lighting' in your pics as the black areas are making them look like a work of Rembrandt.

Lol, I had to google that one. Yeah, I did opt for a bit of stylistic lighting here (and other places I'm sure). I sort of liked the mood it set, and what it left you NOT seeing.

Oh dear.  I have totally fallen for Young Dawn and am now preferring her to the normal version.

Her expressions in panels 1 and 4 are superbly lifelike and overall she is heart-meltingly beautiful.

She is kinda developing into her own self isn't she? Thanks for the praise!

Excellent development of the story in this section. Now that Dawn knows there was someone else involved, the door has been opened for her to confront someone she is totally incapable of handling. Whoever that person is did not kill her, or she wouldn't have a future as an investigator. I really like this outfit, and hope she gets into trouble while wearing it. Those sneakers can come of as readily as a pair of pumps. Looking forward to the next installment. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for being so invested in the story. I love the way you dissect it! We shall have to see how things turn out for her
