Is it safe to guess a lot of modern naval philosophy went into this design? The extensive flight deck and comparatively minuscule visible armament brings contemporary brown water corvettes and frigates to mind.

Don't see that many on the theme in military sci-fi. Naumachia did some interesting designs of the sort a decade ago, but not sure if it went anywhere:
