Description                                 nobody came to see me
while i sat upon death row.

all i could do was stare at the wall
and relive the salem trials, as the
                                    jury yelled for my execution
                                          and fixed the scarlet letter
                                                              upon my breast.

  crucify him! crucify him!
                                            why couldn't i be barabbas?

                 he was guilty after all
and after pilate washed his hands,
                 the prisoner went free,
while the innocent was nailed to
                 a sturdy plank of wood.

        i am no christ.
but i am not the person
they spoke of, from the stand,
                                   as tear-stained commentary on
                                            my evil deeds was recounted.

they found me with the gun in my hands.
but i swear i never pulled the trigger.
      the girl with bloodshot eyes
pointed her finger at the accused
when her prints were on the
                             murder weapon as well.

                                             but nobody ever listens to
                                                two sides of the story.
and nobody ever asks the accused
for anything other than the meal order
                                                  for his last supper.

pay, oh sinner, for the choices that you made.
while the rest of us wash our hands of you
                              just like pontius pilate.

pay, oh guilty for the debts you have incurred
while the debtors all exonerate themselves
of the money that they owe.

nobody came to see me on death row.
but they all watched the warden give the order;
they all watched the poison seep into my veins
as judge and executioner had their say.

but let it be known that as
my ghost slipped from life into shadow,
i swear i felt the arms of an angel
                                                      carrying me home at last.

Thank you very much. It is exactly what I needed to express but I would never be able to like you did. One of the best things I have ever read.

I've talked to a man once on death row.
He had a second trial and was proven innocent.
I suppose we don't all have that luxury.

I like the haphazard construction and lack of capitalization. It really feels like something someone would scribble before an execution, but with more thought, of course

I love getting stories out of poetry; they are always so vivid. So dreary, so beautiful... Wonderful work!
