Description This is a digital version of Gaian map for my friend - What does this look like to you? Good? Should I change something?

I had to change the format slightly to make the map twice wider than high so it can be easily used as a sexture for a possible render.

I'll finish the texture after more information about Gaia is released.

Go here to see the reference map:[link]
I have traced it over, cleaned it up to pure b/w version and then colored the oceans

MS Paint. I traced it over a pencil sketch.

don't worry, the mutations are not that serious, the kittens could be of bad health though

Wait a minute... OH NO! I think I made a picture of Gaia instead of Colibri B... I'll make a new one for Colibri B! Do you have a map of your planet

Wow! D= I didn't notice that! D=
Yeah! sure I have!
here: [link] I guess the blue/white color combo made things confusing! I'm sorry! And you can try to "break down" the eastern continent into a few big islands if you don't mind, there should be around 75% of water

I love maps! I wanted to find the map of the world 50 million years in the future when my story starts... unsuccessful

PeteriDish In reply to M3rcaptan [2012-05-24 11:57:56 +0000 UTC]

Damn... I'll try to look around and tell you if I find something useful
What about taking a map 100 million years in the future - I sure such a map is aviable on the net - and by comparing it to our current map, figure out the "middle position" of the continents?

M3rcaptan In reply to PeteriDish [2012-05-24 15:08:15 +0000 UTC]

that'd work! but... there's another problem too... I've seen a video showing movement of the continents in 400 million years or something and I paused at 50 and it was not very cool :/ I was thinking about changing the movement of the continents by "colliding" an asteroid in some where critical, but I don't know if such an asteroid hit the earth, wouldn't it wipe life off the earth's surface? more specifically, I want Australia shifted downwards, getting cold, but right now it is going north, and I thought an asteroid in the middle of the pacific ocean where continents are drifting away would work... kinda confusing... I already have one event in my story that is not scientifically plausible, I don't wanna add another :/

PeteriDish In reply to M3rcaptan [2012-05-24 16:08:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's too bad. Also, 50 million years is not gonna be "that" big of a change, Africa will maybe be ripped in two parts, the divide going through the great rift valley, but as far as I know, the continents were already more or less in their current possitions 65 million years ago, some of the current continental bridges didn't exist and some continental bridges that don't exist any more were in place, but roughly... You get the idea. Also, I think it is not a "happy" choice to have australia shift downwards, because it shifts upwards... I don't know if an asteroid could "reverse" the movement of continents, but I'm not holding my breath for that. Also, I don't think there would be much life left after such impact, most large animals would go bye bye...
I guess I didn't cheer you up, did I? I'm sorry...

M3rcaptan In reply to PeteriDish [2012-05-24 16:44:08 +0000 UTC]

well... maybe I should tweak the timeline a little bit... and that has to do with my second scientifically unacceptable part of the story... which is humans developing a kind of technology that makes them hibernate for a long time, very long time. The more that time is, the more it will be fiction than science, but also the more I have time for the world map to be different. however, I am doomed to fail anyway, because the world I want is a world that has many little continents instead of one big continent (which is sadly what is happening, "Pangea Ultima" ) one of which is a continent drifted to the south pole (actually now that I think about it, it doesn't really matter which continent that'd be, but I don't think it's gonna help anyway )

By the way the reason I want small continents is to allow more diversity in my new world (although that's not the only reason, the other one is just because I simply like such a world )

So what do you think?

PeteriDish In reply to M3rcaptan [2012-05-24 17:07:43 +0000 UTC]

I think you could have a "separate" land just by rising the sea level, as the lowlands would get flooded which would create many "islands"
Well, the other thing you can do is to say that the tectonic plates crashed so hard together in some places that they broke apart This is speciffically what I didn't want to go through in my project, which is why I decided for an alien planet. Total freedom!

PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-05-24 23:07:11 +0000 UTC]

Sure. No problem I was actually thinking if I shouldn't do fanart for Gaia "full-time" for some time, just because Colibri has turned out to be quite too earth-like, no matter how many differences I thought there are at first... I am quite helpless lately, it turned out to be a bigger bait than what I can swallow...

OblivionJunkey94 In reply to PeteriDish [2012-05-25 00:24:52 +0000 UTC]

Hey i think colibri isnt too earth like! Plus you dont want to make it too alien (is that possible?) but i know how you mean ive hit a wall that make the great wall of china look like a bit of litter you could crush it but yeah id like to do fan art sometime the only problem is i dont know what id do i like a lot of the guys and gals stuff out thair but its hard to do them justice if you know what i mean

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-05-25 11:19:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I know what you mean. But if you look at the facts, the only different things are the greater axial tilt and shorter year. Otherwise it's just second earth in all other aspects - composition, desnity, gravity, atmospheric gases - event he percentages are almost identical, only the atmosphere is about 20% thicker, but I don't think it's as "alien" as it could be. I started to think that even a quite "extreme" world could have flourishing abd diverse biosphere. For example a less massive planet could have much higher trees on its surface, If you combine it with a more stronger cellular walls, the planet's forests could compare skyscrapers on earth, which seems rather neat
I was also thinking whether the world should be a moon or a planet - I originally decided for a planet, because I wanted to have six-legged animals and I didn't want to copy Pandora from Avatar. Problem is, a low g world is less likely to support life for a long time, because its liquid core is more likely to solidify, which would mean that the planet/moon would have no magnetosphere which would deflect lethal radiation. And a low gravity world would only have a thin atmosphere, and without internal warmth from the core, and with the solar energy escaping easily into space through the thin atmosphere. Not only it would have thin atmosphere, but this thin "shell" of air would be extremely vulnerable to solar storms/blasts, because the planet could be stripped off the little air it has completely, or at least of the greater portion of it, which would be lethal to most of life. The world would be rather cold, and on top of that, thin atmosphere would mean that it would be rather dry too, because there would be fewer clouds and therefore not as much rain. I wanted to have rainforest-like environments on my world, but dry piece of rock with thin atmosphere doesn't seem to be a wise choice for that. If the world was a moon, however, things could be a little different. Most of all, even a low-gravity world could have a liquid core, because it would be subjected to the friction of the gas giant it would orbit, and such a planet would have many other moons, which could pull on each other, including this "livin" moon, which would create an internal heat like on Europa, but because this gas giant would be much closer to the star than Jupiter is in our system, there would be a surfacial ocean on that moon, unlike on Europa. Also, the strong magnetosphere of this gas giant (which could easily be much larger than Jupiter - Jupiter is a little "puppy" in comparison with some gas giants elsewhere in the universe which we know about) would protect the moon from lethal radiation from the space, which includes solar erruptions, which would otherwise strip a low-g world of its thin atmosphere, but because of the strong field generated by this gas giant, even a rather low g moon could retain its atmosphere, and it could have a liquid core, because of the strong pulling and stretching forces produced by the gas giant, which would provide the moon with internal source of warmth. And, in fact, this benefit of a "guardian planet" makes low-g moons more likely to support life than low-g planets. The more I think about it, the more it seems that I should have "degrade" Colibri to moon status, and that I should make it smaller than earth. I don't want to have a "too" low g, but I like the idea of large animals walking on slender legs.
I think I'll step back for some time until I decide in which direction I'm gonna go...

Whoa! Long message! Well i youve just taught me a lot! Not really sure how to anwnser that but yeah i suppose a low g moon would be pretty cool now that i think about it orbisia is a huge planet but i never gave any of the above much thaught but any who i hope wish you luck with youre decision XD
