i like how you think about the internal organs/structures of these creatures. a lot of people don't do that

Interesting. Does this one move using its arms? They seem muscular enough to propel it over the seafloor... it looks pretty heavy, too...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to Adiraiju [2012-04-11 10:10:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I know it looks "armored" but the scutes aren't nearly as big or "heavy-looking" on the actual creature, but it's too hard to make them small enough and still hexagonal. I'm a lazy person too, which is why I didn't bother with making them smaller. XD

It doesn't live on the sea floor, it's supposed to be a pelagic animal, and that's why I thought the "gut bladder" would help to make it lighter, but I didn't include it here to see what it looks like without it. Seeing that it evoques "heaviness" in people, it really isn't a bad idea to give it the gut bladder after all...

The arms are strong because they help to propell it through water and they're used for catching prey. the animal is supposed to have some nasty spines to protect it from predators nd to have grabbing surfaces to catch prey. i think those thorns would be mainly on the inside of the arms, they could work for defense as well as catching prey. the animal could "slap" predators and give them some painful wounds. The spines would break if too much strain was put on them, and I imagine those infected not-easily-healing wounds it could cause...

Adiraiju In reply to PeteriDish [2012-04-11 10:13:57 +0000 UTC]

All right, so it's a starfish-sea urchin-jellyfish... I guess those scutes are probably very fine indeed... Still, nice job!

PeteriDish In reply to Adiraiju [2012-04-11 10:40:30 +0000 UTC]

They are! The scutes that beat the spines would be no bigger than the diameter of the needle-like spines themselves!

In which direction? Are they that thick, or that wide?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to Adiraiju [2012-04-11 22:21:36 +0000 UTC]

I meant diameter, but they'd be very thin too, more than twice Ε―wide" than thick, and that's why they'd need the spines for protection. Their tiny osteoderms woud allow for the same flexibility as fish's scales

I have replied to this question on the other anatomy picture you've commented on some new ideas, but still kinda stuck in place because I don't like anything that I managed to put on paper... =/

wow, fantastic. How big is it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to Dragonthunders [2012-04-09 22:48:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
about the size... Honestly, I am not sure yet. there could be different species which would look slightly differently, some would have shorter arms than this one... But I haven't thought abou how big they exactly are... I guess that most of them would be 30 - 50 cm "tall" but who knows? maybe there could be one that would be 1.5 m long or even more.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dragonthunders In reply to PeteriDish [2012-04-10 01:36:53 +0000 UTC]

scales that are would limit its size.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to Dragonthunders [2012-04-10 05:11:38 +0000 UTC]

Well... First, why should the scales limit its size? And second... The "scales" are much bigger than they would beon the real animal, this is just a sketch and it's nowhere near being 100% exact.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dragonthunders In reply to PeteriDish [2012-04-10 18:43:54 +0000 UTC]

nice. The scales could be equal to the exoskeletons of arthropods, which help protect the child from the elements, ect. But it is a major impediment to grow beyond a meter because it is an invertebrate.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to Dragonthunders [2012-04-10 20:25:48 +0000 UTC]

Well arthropods are limited due to the fact that the exoskeletons couldn't suppert their weight on dry land, and they have to shed their shells in order to grow. These creatures are aquatic and their armor is composed of rather small "scales" rather than the armor of arthropods. You see, the scales would be much smaller than I have drawn them, but I was lazy! they're not quite as "armoured" as they look.
