Description ...if penguins fed on petrels...

A scene from another world.

A rather large secondarily flightless creature adapted for aquatic lifestyle breaches out of the water in an attempt to catch its former kin.

(Because vicious alien predators need more love! )

Thanks! If this was a more detailed piece, it would make the differences more apparent though. And sure! Who doesn't like Abiogenesis' work, right?
But to get to the core, at least as far as I know, Abiogenesis' aliens have four jaws, all of which have bone inside them, while here I only have a "usual" beak which is oftenly serrated or toothed, and those "lateral jaws" of my creatures are actually soft muscular (tentacle-like) organs which can have several shapes, like the "sideways lips" you can see here or also in this list:

And in case you are wondering, the black "Y" shapes on their faces are chemoreceptoric grooves

Interesting. Would you mind if I draw some of your creatures or a similar one, from the same world some day?

And no! Of course I don't mind! Not in the slightest! But you'll have to let me use your ideas (with giving you credit, of course!

To say the truth, the tentacles weren't my idea, but 's!

I am really grateful for ideas like that, it helped me to make the creatures look more "alien"

Also, I don't know if you'll consider making some, but the "fish" (I call them "squish") have the beak on the belly, it is surrounded by three tentacles (only two of which are kept in the terrestrial forms (including all the secondarlily aquatic animals ) and they have three pairs of cartilagious "lateral fins" behind each of which is a "c"-shaped spiracle. Many of them have two dorsal fins, but i guess it's not a rule
Their important feature is that their tail flaps vertically, like the fluke of whales, rather than horizontally, like the tailfin of sharks and fish.

Now you have a rather complete summary of the "vertebrate" life of this world. What I'll be really interested in are some armoured animals, I'd like to see if you'll be able to come up with something which would be "unearthly" but still in line with the established morphology of the creatures.

I had some ideas, but they all looked too much like turtles or glyptodonts... XD

Your alien concepts were really visually attractive, so I'd like to see your ideas on paper!

We'll I'll probably do some fliers/gliders as that is my favourite kind of creatures. I see you gave them quite much thought! I'm not really fond of these wings however, [link] too much like earth's bat which makes it unlikely... I mean it would have to evolve a palm already to similar to that of Earth's creatures, and then such a similar wing? I don't buy it
[link] that on the other hand looks way better. I guess I'll use it as some base.

PeteriDish In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2012-04-05 07:06:27 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean, but those "wings" were never meant for gliding, they are "butterfly nets" for catching "insects" and they also work as display features.

Here are the actually bat-like wings on a flying creature. I trashed this idea, but just so you can see it: [link]

Some gliders are here:
[link]
[link]
But those are not the only ideas I have for flyers/gliders

Here are some other flyer sketches, but I will probably proceed tto making a major overhaul of one of them, because I don't really like them much:
[link]
[link]
[link]

There is one group of flyers already, but I depicted it only through this "seabird" here:
[link]
[link]

and a "penguin" here: [link]
[link]
[link]

The "penguin" might look very different from it, but the idea for this group of flyers arose from this sketch:
[link]
I consider that sketch outdated by now.

What I would like to see is if you can come up with some interesting "chest-beaked" flyers or gliders (you've already seen some chest-beaked animals, didn't you? ) but I'd like to see some "head-beaked" gliders/flyers too.
Just remember - these animals are meant to have short tails.

Kind of shame, for I love long, thin tails... Well I guess if one pair of your legs transforms into tail like structures tail is not needed.. but still such a three tailed variation would be damn interesting.
For Now I am doing a series of Lovecraft inspired images but I'll think about these too.

PeteriDish In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2012-04-06 16:41:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! There definitely will be animals with leg-tails!

But I was thinking along those lines: antelopes are damn quick and yet they can turn at high speeds, even though they had short tails, monkeys use their tails as "fifth limb" but these creatures already star with six...

The only "railed" vertebrates are the "squish" with their vertically flapping tailfin, the terrestrial creatures lost it. I know it's an odd thing to only have a tail-stub, but I "wanted" to have something odd going on, but even thoughm I think in comparison with a planet where NO creature has eyes... You know what I mean!

But tails have many functions.

Haha Yeah I know what you mean... but that isn't completely true... Darwin IV has more secrets than the movie showed, read the book!

Thanks! the "tentacles" formed "trukns" in this creature, where the nostrills travelled to the tip of the tentacles: [link]

Or the tentacles work as sticky "tongues" like in this "anteater" here: [link] but this sketch is a little outdated, I have changed my opinion about how the hindlegs should be jointed since, and I also decided to make it less girthy and visibly quick-running, but I have yet to draw it properly, but here i have already used such body plan for it in this simple ecosystem: [link]

There will also be nectivorous animals which will have such tentacles, but I have many animals in which the tentacles are used to aid in grabbing prey, and they only lie pressed against the jaws, while not covering the beak entirely, like here:
[link]
[link]

And there are also animals (mainly herbivorous or omnivorous) which have the tentacles shaped like "cheek flaps" like here:
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link]

(That suxpeciously quadrupedal "ape" has vestigal midlegs - see the claws on the belly )

But there are many more body plans, the "reptiles and amphibians" of this world have their jaws on the chast and only the tentacles are on the head, like here:
[link]
[link]
[link]
[link] (but here the shark-like predator is a special case, with the tentacles between the head and jaws, so essentially on the "neck"), but I am not yet completely sure about the "shark's" head yet, the placement of the tentacles has no special reason whatsoever, except not copying the "crocodile", and also this arrangement makes it hard to place the chemoreceptoric groove in a way which would "make sense" - as I said - dtill not completely resolved problem.

The tentacles are a secondary idea, but now I consider the tentacles as an established vertebrate feature.

Here are the same animals without tentacles:
[link]
[link]

Here is the "cryptomantis" you've seen above, also without tentacles, and, similarly to the anteater, with "wrongly" jointed hindlegs:
[link]

For the "propperly" hinged hindlegs, see the "ungulate sketchup" picture in the "cheek flaps" category of this comment

PeteriDish In reply to commander-salamander [2012-04-01 21:58:42 +0000 UTC]

I am sorry to dissapoint you, they don't. - At least as far as I know. - But given that this marine predator could fly long ago in the past, it is as IF a penguin ate a seabird. This doesn't mean that this predator is specialized on eating seabirds, this probably is an accepted opportunity. This is what great white sharks do, and when they propell themselves high into the air, I'm always intimidated by their immense strength and agillity, and I wanted to portray those atributes of this alien creature here, even though it is meant to be much smaller than a great white...
I am sorry if the description was confusing.
