PeteriDish — flightless predator

Description stands over 4 m tall when it stands completely vertically to observe its surroundings and around 3.5 m when standing normally. The complete drawing is a male with keratinous growths on its head and tail, the incomplete drawing is a charging female. I am sorry that the two sketches ended up like this, it would maybe make more sense if I have finished the female sketch and made it appear as if she's running in the foreground. I'll probably do that later, this looks just silly... XD

I note the lower limbs have devolved to a single spike; are these perhaps gripping utensils, holding and goring prey as in certain Snaiadi hunters, or might they hold male and female together during mating? The back-plates remind me a lot of wings, and the overall impression is ostrich-like; were these descended from fliers, and have these plates/wings found another use (if they're hard growths, they might hold back predator attacks to the back)?

your observations are all correct, and the spike-libs could be used for both, goring prey and lock male and female during mating, and I think the parent could use them to bring chunks of food to their young or the other parent who is waiting with them hidden out of view and the flap-like structures on the front are retained (largely ligamentous) "canards" of their flying ancestor and are used in mating displays and communication

Oh, I like it! The keratinous growths have lots of potential for different colors and shapes in their design...

Thanks! this is just the basic idea that I hope to elaborate on later. At this point, I just want to establish the basic diversity, before I start making more detailed variation Now I'd be happy to get to the level of classes or maybe families in some cases.

When I looked at the ninaiture I thought it's one multi-legged creature I think it would be even better if it was true

PeteriDish In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2013-01-25 19:11:55 +0000 UTC]

well that wouldn't be consistent with the six-legged anatomy XD

as for the wings - they don't have to be based on limbs. that was one of the things I liked so much.

hmmmm... what do you suggest? they're too big to give up ribs or anything else...

KingsOfEvilArt In reply to PeteriDish [2013-01-25 19:46:13 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure. I was thinking of the insects. It would be cool to have a vertebrate-like thing with a non-limb based wing>

PeteriDish In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2013-01-25 19:48:12 +0000 UTC]

well, maybe even insects have limb-based limbs. I have also been presented with the "skin lobe" hypothesis, but as it turns out, it is now thought that insect wings are actually one of the branches of their originally biramous limbs
