Wohow! This is a horrible meshup! Bowhead whale, humpback whale, liopleurodon and the previous "xenocete" concept merged together
I don't really like the flippers, especially the middle ones, But I just wanted to try something different for them, I didn't want to make them look too similar to the "dolphins", but it didn't really work out... =/
I quite like the head though, but I still don't know how to make the filtering mechanism work. One solution would be having bristles in the beak instead of teeth, and maybe another set of short bristles fringing the inside of the "tentacle-lips", but I will have to think about that more...

Hmm... I must say it looks to whale-ish, but still I like it Especially that four-flipper condition.

Thanks for your imput! I thought four flippers would make for an interesting look, but i don't really like how this turned out. It is just a sketch, I have uploaded a few more that followed after this, you can go check them out if you want, I'd like to hear your suggestions!
what makes it whalish is the bowhead-wahele-like head, with the sensoric grove almost mimicking the jawline of the very same whale...

Worry not. Convergent evolution works suspiciously good here on Earth... So why not an interstellar convergence?

I wouldn't have done anything that doesn't have a basis in reality, but I always try to find a way how to not make my inspiration too obvious...

All right.
P.S. when you said two flukes would limit movement, like here: [link] Well, I thought of this arrangement as a fish put sideways, some fish have dorsal and anal fins close to their caudal fin, and they work just fine...

Very nice! For some reason, I get the impression that this species is particularly large, but not the largest of them all - something like the equivilant of a Finback...
Love the head!

Thank you very much! Yes, I agree, it's definitely bigger than the "dolphins", but it's not largerst filter feeder.
The head is probably the only part I'm quite fond of at this point, I need to change the body and flipper shape, I don't quite like the result.
And yes. This is indeed similar head design to what the other "neognathids" (look at the tree of life I did not so long ago) have, two tentacles and beak-like jaws between them. only in these "whales and dolphins" the tentacles are flat, broad and work like "lips", it creates a more streamlined body shape for water movement. The teeth don't stick out and that decreases the drag. I wanted to have this convergently evolved in one lineage of the flying animals, but flyers seem to be the biggest problem for me... I really need to work on them some more.
About the filter feeders... I was thinking of making the jaws with a row of long slits or slots on each side of the "beak" and in both jaws instead of "baleens" to make this animal further different from earth whales, making the filter feeding mechanism more similar to whale sharks, even though they filter through the gill slits. What do you think?

Aha, and I take it that sketch you uploaded just recently is what details this concept?
I like it! It's plausible, and serves to distinguish this thing from earth Whales quite effectively.
Wonderful work!

Yes. I did a "beak" with baleens or bristles of sorts, but it looked too "whalish" so I got the idea to make the "beak" with slits, and I'm going to go with the latter idea for all filter feeders I have so far, with flippers, flukes and "paddles". Thank you again!

One word.....β¦EPIC this is very nice lot the lips are a nice feature for this guy and a good filtering mechanism for u how about bristles in it's throat?

I've written about that in the description
I think the look of it won't be too different from a bowhead whale, just the "baleens" will be in both jaws, not just the upper one

OblivionJunkey94 In reply to PeteriDish [2012-03-19 21:26:51 +0000 UTC]
Oh okay sorry I thought it would have teeth and then bristles are you going to have whales with teeth?

Well of course there will be an alien sperm whale too! It has teeth, right? Is it frigging huge? Damn yeah!
P.S. The "baleens" will be modiffied "teeth" anyway...

Yeah such a magnificent animal how it battles giant squid and so many things
π: 0 β©: 1
PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-03-19 22:35:39 +0000 UTC]
Yeah! Hands down, the squid wins sometimes. If it can hold the "spermie" underwater long enough, the whale will drown.
I want to parallelize this relationship with a giant deep sea "squish", but I don't want to make it too obvious...

OblivionJunkey94 In reply to PeteriDish [2012-03-19 22:56:04 +0000 UTC]
Well how's about a squish that blocks you're whales blow holes and suffocates it?

Hey thanks! The eye is still too big in comparison with the body, It makes the animal look smaller than it actually is... Well, it can be a baby!

I think the eye is fine..
It looks pretty huge to me

PeteriDish In reply to NotXRAY0128 [2012-03-19 21:21:39 +0000 UTC]
But big animals tend to have proportionally smaller eyes than small animals. that's why I joked that it's only a baby. It has different proportions than the adult.

Giant Squid have big eyes *shot
Not to much reason you need to follow the earth's proportion rules on a creature that developed on another planet

That's also true, but big eyes are easier targets.

PeteriDish In reply to NotXRAY0128 [2012-03-19 22:10:24 +0000 UTC]
Damn yeah! But then again, the "kraken" doesn't seem to care...
(Cephalopods can heal incredible injuries, including eyes though) I think of these as they could heal a scar, but a bitten-off piece of fluke would only "seal" the wound, but the "dent" will be there. So much for re-growing you eye.
Salamanders can re-grow limbs and eyes too, lizards can re-grow tails and i will have animals with such abilities too, but I think all "higher" animals tend to have crappy healing abilities...

XD, Yeah I am aware of those natural healing abilities XD
I see, well keep up the design work!
