Description So here they are!
Now I feel quite sorry I didn't color the lower one, but the mouth was so out of perspective that I had doubts I will be able to correct it digitally without photoshop, so I didn't bother, but then I felt so sorry for it to leave it out, that I did it partially in MS Pain' and partially in MS Word. It was a long run but I hope it payed out.

The upper one is named Gracilignathus only, no idea for a specific name... (G. scriptus maybe?)
The lower one now goes by the name of "White sharks' jaw" - Squalognathus albus (because the sketch has been left blank, but it might just be light grey in "real life", or a new speciffic name will take its place)
The different jaws are partially for the fun of playing with the shape of the critters, but the variety here is still reasonable, each of them might prefer a different kind of prey or they each use a different hunting stategy. Also, it was a great opportunity to breathe in a little bit more diversity.
If you failed to find the third pair of legs, look at the oval shapes on the tail fin. They're merely pelvic bone vestiges
They flap the tail sidewise, like sharks, but they breathe air, so they have to return to the surface like whales.
I imagine them to be ovoviviparous, the eggs would be kept inside the body (the cloaca is in the gap between the braincase and jaws) and the eggs will be gradually pushed out.
Then a mechanism similar to the pig-nosed turtle (Carretochelys insculpta) kicks in, the young will hatch immediatelly when the water washes over the eggs and then they will race to the surface to breathe in for the first time.
The young are immediatelly able fo care of themselves, they have to find their way to the top of the foodchain without their parent's help.

Interesting aquatic aliens. I think they look great! I wonder what an Aquatic Xenomorph would look like?

Thanks a lot! Aquatic xenomorphs aren't my expertise, but I'm sure there is some fanart, even on DA!

Hello again. Thanks for the reply! I've been doing some research, and there is such a thing as an aquatic Xenomorph. It's only apperance was in a comic book, where it attacked some guys stranded on a waterplanet called "Bracken"(I think). I'll draw one as soon as I can! Bye for now!

That's the coolest and most bizarre thing I've ever seen. XD Plus, yay for vestigial limbs!

PeteriDish In reply to disrhythmic [2012-01-24 16:00:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for following me as I go through the process, even though I have only a handful of creatures so far! It means a lot to me!
P.S. I'm glad the separate braincases made them alien-enough! I was afraid these still looked too "earthly" on the outside, but I guess I could differentiate the creatures more if I made colored versions of them, but I think this project will run as a sketch-based one in the beginning. When I run out of ideas for new critters, I'll sit down to make colored versions, or at least more detailed pencil drawings. Those are just quick pall-point pen sketches.

It's my pleasure, really. ^^

Definitely alien enough. XD I wouldn't want to meet one of those in a dark alley. Or dark body of water, I suppose.
