Description These little guys form colonies of variable size shape and color, and they created vast "amphora reefs" over the eons.
My older take on their anatomy is here:

You can use that picture to see what are some of the most common shapes of the amphorae.

amazing. But, that this made the shell?

Well, corals also have "shells", right? If you want to know what are the shells of these worms made of, I don't know myself, I haven't given much thought to the details yet, but it could be either calcium carbonate or calcium silicate.

Dragonthunders In reply to PeteriDish [2012-04-09 14:07:10 +0000 UTC]

no, corals have skeletons, not shells. Perhaps it is true on the calcium compound.

I know they don't have shells... Let's say that corals have "hard hideouts," just like these worms.

Also if you see something written in "", it doesn't have a literal meaning and you shouldn't take it word-to-word

ok, and ok. that would reach maximum size?

PeteriDish In reply to Dragonthunders [2012-04-09 15:21:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, but they would be VERY small- The "amphora" could be roughly thumbnail-sized? I don't expect them to be much bigger, many of them will be even smaller

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dragonthunders In reply to PeteriDish [2012-04-09 15:47:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, I reckon its maximum size would be 10 cm. Maybe it would be fascinating by number, not size.

PeteriDish In reply to Dragonthunders [2012-04-09 15:50:49 +0000 UTC]

They'd be even smaller - as big as your own thumb-nail!

Not good... They'll need some extra work... The cave-pig shouldn't take terribly long though, but I haven't got around updating it yet...

OblivionJunkey94 In reply to PeteriDish [2012-04-09 14:11:35 +0000 UTC]

Okay how deep would the caves go? what do the cave pigs feed on what would feed on them? I ask a lot of questions in the hope that they may some how help you

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-04-09 14:44:45 +0000 UTC]

Believe me that I ask the same questions I have some rough ideas, but nothing visually defined yet. I have some ideas, eyeless squish and stuff like that, also some "amphibians" with kinda axolotle-like nymphs - the adults will have an interesting lifestyle but I don't want to reveal too much now - and i don't knw if the "apex predators" of the cave ecosystem will be the cave pigs themselves, or if there will be something even larger than them. probably something snale-like or worm-like, what do you think? Also, I think some of the caves would only be humid, but still without a lot of water on the floor, with some flooded areas... Also, I have no idea what should be the apex predator of those "ponds"... It should probably be something different than what hunts the cave pigs... what about some blind eel or giant worm that kills with electricity and has electromagnetic receptors to find prey in the blackness of its environment?
(You know, IR receptors would be useless, because the prey animals would be cold-blooded, but even "cold-blooded" animals have a heart and muscles that create detectable electromagnetic impulses. )
But all these are quite far from being finished...

OblivionJunkey94 In reply to PeteriDish [2012-04-09 16:20:32 +0000 UTC]

I was acctualy going to sugest a eel/worm/centapede like predator that could maybe use the cave pigs to incubate eggs or somthing strange there a creature on king kong called a carnictus that is like a worm pretty interesting stuff i like the idea of a cave eel a lot!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2012-04-09 16:33:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'll see what I'll do with it! A centipede/worm could surely use the cave pigs for incubating the eggs! and also the young would feed on the flesh of the cave pig as their first food! Nice idea dude! I don't want to make the cave ecosystem "too" diverse though, so i'll maybe have to cut it down to only a few of vertebrates and the rest will have to be invertebrates

Youre welcome prehaps you could draw a life cycle for the predator and also had a idea for a enviroment where the cave could open up into a swamp were you could have some flyers that would live in e caves like bats but in you own awesome way!

Adiraiju [2012-04-09 07:21:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh, so this is what you were talking about! I assume there are different varieties, just like there are different corals?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to Adiraiju [2012-04-09 07:41:55 +0000 UTC]

Of course there are many of them! They would differ in shape of the colonies, the dirrerent species would be of a different size, and they would differ in color too!
I just got an idea for a further modiffication. Here the setae are on the head itself, but I somewhat forgot to think about how to get the collected foor particles in the mouth... It wouldn't make much sense to have a "tongue" which would collect the food particles from the setae, so I think this "brush" will be on the "tongue" itself. What do you think?

P.S. Another idea! What about "hermit worms?" They'd protect their soft bodies by living in shells of other marine animals!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Adiraiju In reply to PeteriDish [2012-04-11 10:00:57 +0000 UTC]

I like the Hermit Worm idea, and the setae on the tongue should work just fine...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PeteriDish In reply to Adiraiju [2012-04-11 10:46:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I will yet have to draw them! The "hermit worms" would be, contrary to the hermit crabs, "sessile" because they couldn't drag themselves along the sea floor... I imagine these "hermit worms" like either distant relatives of the amphora worms that don't have the ability to form the "amphorae" so they have to find shelter in the empty shells of their dead former owners, and I imagine the hermit worms could work to a more substantial size, and that there wouldn't be only filter-feeding ones, but also ambush predators, which would have a spear-like "tongue" instead.
