Description
One of the most incredible places I have been. I think it even rivals some parts of the grand canyon, and that is saying a lot. As we waited for the sun to kiss that horizon I found myself shooting all the small rock formations behind me. Once the sun got to this point it seemed all the people had left leaving only a few photographer's trying to get their shot of the bend. My lens wasn't wide enough so I had to create this panoramic of 4 vertical images. I also had to pull back some saturation because that light was hitting so hard some of the rock was as red as a lobster. I also had to clean up some of the sun beams and took out a few blurred out flies (there were thousands in that area). To even get this angle my tripod was on the edge of the cliff scaring me half to death that I wouldn't knock it over. Sitting there with nothing holding me back was a thrill and was quite relaxing. This might have been the best photographic moment I have had thus far. A race against the light and getting everything just the way I wanted. Anyways, hope you enjoy!(edit- used different files for pano and changed the border. Let me know if you prefer the previous version better)

yeh, i wanted to but as you know, the winds can get pretty harsh there depending on the time of the yr. that evening it was a full on gust and i didn't want to risk it.

I literally had to clean my lens and camera after took those shots. Did you go to north rim yet? i went there right after the snow melted last yr and it was still really cold. perfect lighting that day but i think it's perfect lighting every day there.

My camera and lens came back pretty clean thankfully, but I have not been to the north rim yet, its on my list of AZ locations. Lots of good spots and no crowds

Paria canyon is another spot that's a well overlooked area near page. make sure you've got water and a 4x4. we rescused some "city folk" that got stuck there for 3 days.

Yeah, I would like to go up in that area as well. We didn't have an off road vehicle so we didn't want to go too crazy ha

I think this has to be your best landscape photo yet, and this shot is incredible! It almost looks like you took it part way down the cliff, it's a cool perspective. The sunstar and light on the rocks in the foreground are awesome

Thanks, I think this is my best landscape shot ha. Surprisingly all you need to do is put the tripod at the very edge of the cliff hoping your camera gear doesn't fall the thousand or so feet down ha. I wouldn't have posted this without the sunstar, it was critical

How do you do sunstars? Do you just underexpose the sky? I've always liked sunstars, but haven't thought about doing them. It works perfectly here

Basically just have something partially blocking the sun and stop down to something around f/16 and you should get it. It's all about where you place it. I find it easier to wait til the sun is close to the horizon.
