Description More people suggested me to make laser gun so here it is. Concept of laser rifle. Objective was to make shine solid metal piece from the sci-fi future. It works with light beam not with projectiles and therefore there is no recoil. Instead of stock I use its place as handle.

I uploaded more pictures of this project. There are pictures from various angles and sizes + wireframes of model in my gallery.

All work was done in 3ds max + vray as engine. Model is highpoly. Structures of model is visible in wireframe posted in my gallery.

One word - beautiful. The only improvement I would make is to add a shoulder stock. This could be done by simply extending the grey section on top of the grip back, or by making a stock attachment. I don't know what it is with futuristic weapons, but people like to leave off the shoulder stock. It actually helps by increasing the stability of the weapon, making it more accurate. That aside, this is a game-worthy model. I especially like the scope and grip design. Very sleek, very sexy.

It definitely has a sci-fi feel to it. The coloration is excellent, and could suggest a military or even civilian use. I wouldn't worry too much about how it operates, as that can come later. However, madcomm is right, the battery pack (magazine?) is in an awkward (if streamlined) location. The weapon would have to be held vertically to reload, taking the muzzle off target. Instead, try a side mounted magazine.

All-in-all, a very original piece that has a great deal of character. I look forward to seeing more designs like this in the future.

hi. tnx for opinion. I excluded shoulder stock on purpose. I planned it for heavy character like Urdnot Wrex from mass effect 1. You know, heavy armored guy holding this in one hand waving by it around. And mag is weak point. It visible that I was in hurry at the end of modeling. Nut tnx for credit.

They say that a picture is worth as much as a 1000 words, and to be honest, this applies here.

Right here, you have in front of you a beautiful piece of work. The 3D modelling is flawless.
The design is original, and the stock handle is not something usually seen. Also, I don't see the usual mistake which people make when making laser guns, here the trigger in this weapon is actually a weapon.
The weapon, itself, is easy to imagine being used. The proportion are about correct, and the binocular is a nice touch.
The colouring is simple yet excellent, and the metal blue and iron/silver touch really hints a SCI-FI feel.
And god. Oh god. This rendering is simply magnificient. Good use of light points and mirroring. The shadows really bring up the design well.

Now for the cons:
Taking in the design considerations, I see some simple flaws which isn't really a big issue but is worth mentioning.
First of all, the weapon doesn't have recoil. That's true. But last time I checked, energy weapons (especially lasers) make a lot of heat, and I don't see exactly how the weapon loses its heat in efficiency.
The clip, or battery in front of the handle (At least I hope it is) seem difficult to remove if used (imagine yourself removing that clip to change it. The handling could be better)

bookyle In reply to madcomm [2012-06-25 21:15:37 +0000 UTC]

Consider the following:

The weapon is made to be close to 100% efficient, such that almost all of the energy is transferred to the projectile/ laser beam/ whatever, and the percentage of energy converted to heat is small enough that the weapon can be air cooled

or, if you don't buy that, the internals of the gun is warped/coated in some metallic alloy that has a very very very high specific heat capacity. Thus the weapon does not loose heat, but rather "stores" it within the "heat capacitor" if you will.

The only problem I have with the weapon is: how is it supposed to be held? The back of the ring seems to be blocking the pistol grip.

One other thing, the lack of a shoulder stock make the scope useless

Hi. thank you for positive words. thats mag is not good. I know. I wanted to catch time so I did it in minutes. I ended as everytime. There is always space for improvment. That why I like critique. It push you forward all time. Bye.

I saw Doom a while ago, and I couldn't help but think that the barrel of the rifle here is very similar to the barrel on that plasma rifle.

*Goes to look up aforementioned weapon to see just how similar they are*.

Actually, the only thing they have in common is the business end having this sort of Y-shape. But yours is far less pronounced.

And I can't help but feel, looking at the inside of the barrel, that the Hyperion sends out a concentrated beam of energy, rather than a concentrated burst of melting plasma. That or a concentrated lethal bolt, like maybe something similar to what the Daleks use.

I love this, your designs are awesome!

I did at first think that, that handle at the back looked as if it would get in the way. But I looked at some other weapons and its actually fine. And not having a stock would make it more maneuverable (like a sawn off shotgun).

Looks like it could be a functional carbine. You could definitely fit a telescopic stock onto it without sacrificing wheel grip design.

The chrome bits on each side of the rifle could be extended to be the bars supporting the shoulder stock butt.

Rexob [2013-02-06 01:17:29 +0000 UTC]

Another wonderful piece. As stated by another, this needs a stock of some sort - for any kind of rifle where there is a scope, the additional support of a shoulder stock is critical to make it fully feasible. Without the shoulder stock this weapon is very difficult to sight in accurately. Even when placed into its futuristic setting, anyone wielding this would benefit greatly from the added stability. Think of the strength a triangle has a shape, the same applies to stabilizing a weapon. You want as many "stable" points of contact as possible when using a scoped weapon.

peterku In reply to Rexob [2013-02-06 08:08:41 +0000 UTC]

I understand it and take this objection. I forgot to do movable shoulder. Its funny because when you look at the rear half circle behind grip - it can easily be adjustable.....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rexob In reply to peterku [2013-02-06 16:50:30 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I didn't really gather that by its design initially. In that case, I would flatten out the rear padding some, that would make that more obvious and functional. However, a rounded pad would allow the shooter to maneuver the weapon vertically with great ease.
