Description Beauty and the Beast was my #4 best Disney Movie of all time. So needless to say, I was keen to have that nostalgic hit of the live action remake. Sure, it's a cash-in, but cash-in's aren't so bad if the viewer is enjoying them.

But damnit Disney! Stop making me so TORN about a film! Beauty and the Beast 2017 was one of those films where I felt immersed and caught up in the songs and atmosphere, yet something was stopping me from really liking it.. To me, this was because Emma Watson (Belle) has... 1 FACIAL EXPRESSION! The only expression I've seen her do since she first appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone is the "....WTF?" eyebrow-raised expression. Admittedly, she does this expression very well, but it doesn't really suit when you're being chased by wolves, talking with a giant monstrous beast, or dancing in a beautiful ballroom. If her behaviour could just feel a bit more... organic it would be so much more easy to forgive, but I just couldn't buy her performance.

Don't get me wrong. I was really happy with most of the rest of the movie. The song and dance numbers were spectacularly remade with painstaking detail and actors that were all enjoying dancing on set. And it's hard not to get caught up in the energetic atmosphere of the songs.

This really helps offset Emma's performance because everyone around her is so vibrant and alive. And Emma Watson *does* look beautiful as Belle. She physically suits the role well. I just wish that character of deep earnesty was more present in her performance.

The story mostly sticks to the old one except for some... unusual new additions. I was fortunate enough to see the movie with animetist and we were both puzzled at a couple of the strange story decisions. For example, Beast and Belle use a magic map given to Beast by the sorceress, but this is used only to show how Belle's mother died in one scene. Wherein this incredibly powerful artifact of immense power is never broght up again, not even to get Belle to her father instantaniously.
I liked seeing characters like Lafoo given more character depth, though it would've been nice to see him have a change of heart in certain scenes. Both of us simultaneously cringed when Lafoo left Belle's father to be locked up.
That being said, even if I was disappointed by some of the acting, we both thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the lush, astonishing visuals, the beautiful orchestra and how immersive the movie felt.

Perhaps it's simply due to me audio editting for so long, but the auto-tune stood out to me like a sore thumb. So while I was being visually blown away and the surrounding actors were selling it, Emma's singing sadly broke the immersion for me.

Overall, it's another detailed, painstaking remake of a classic movie I adore. Though it is disappointing that Belle's 1991 cartoon face showed more convincing human facial expressions than Emma Watson's 2017 performance did.

The way I notice about Beauty and the Beast remake is their flaws; dull human facial expressions, best recreated scenes being rush out and auto-tune singing that should be re-dub by professional singers. Not to mention, I really dislike the CGI update of Beast; He look too anthropomorphic than being a monstrous mammal.

Though technically this movie has been in development since 2010 since Alan Menken announced it. So it's not all the way recent cash-in. But then again that argument on movies and money is a bit done to death, kind of like talking about politics. Besides one purposeΒ on films, no matter how good or bad they is to make money, the box office is there usually to pay the bills.

Emma Watson the ultimate 1 Facial Expression/master of having only 1 Facial Expression for everything.

That's quite alright. But honestly, did you see the original animated 1991 Beauty and the Beast? If not that's OK, you just need to watch it and compare the two films--the original animated film and the new live-action remake--and think which ones better.

I'm not saying that live action film is bad, but I prefer the original over the remake. Plus, I was a baby when I got the original film on VHS (along with The Little Mermaid and Aladdin). Sorry, ramblings a 1990s kid.

Yeah i remember seeing the Original Animated one years ago just don't remember it that well and not much of the characters other then Gaston.

I may do just that when i perhaps can watch the live action one and the original to see how different they are.

Good. Also note, the original animated version is the only animated film (at that time) to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. That's a hell of a achievement for an animated movie in the 90s (or animated films in general)

Well it is Disney ... their movies(after they started becoming more clear and well beautiful) are always a pleasure to look at.

Let me tell you about clear and beautiful Disney films.

It all started with the classics. (particularly Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady & The Tramp, 101 Dalmatians, Sleeping Beauty, The Sword in the Stone and The Jungle Book)* we're all clear and beautiful animated motion pictures, but from AristoCats to The Black Cauldron, Disney fell into a free-fall of bad reviews and sucky films; I'll admit Oliver and Company was OK (not Disney's best, but still enjoyable), but not good enough for Disney to be redeemed.

It wouldn't be until The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast (The subject of this conversation), Aladdin and The Lion King put Disney back on the map...until Pocahontas came out, then it screwed everything up.

While Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Atlantis: the Lost Empire and Treasure Planet received good reviews, they didn't have the same kind of magic is the first four films of the Disney renaissance did.

However, with Tangled, Wreck-It-Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6 and Zootopia, Disney is once again back on the map.

You'll note, I'm a HUGE Disney historian and fanatic. I practically grew up on Disney films.

Sorry if this went on for a long-ass time.

Beauty and the Beast '17 is the second best Live Action Disney Movie (the best is The Jungle Book). The story was great (filled some plotholes of the original), some characters are more interesting (Belle's Father, in my opinion and Gaston is so mean here!). What I didn't liked is how Disney promoted this movie: "Le Fou is gonna be gay so let's gonna make everybody knows it!". I have nothing against homosexuals but this made me remember Mass Effect 3: turning a straight character into homosexual. And I must disagree with ya: I thought Emma Watson had more than one expression... I would give 8.9/10 for this movie

As always, I agree with you about just about everything
The one part where my opinion differs from yours is that I adore Emma Watson. She is my girl crush bahaha.
I agree that she can't sing for peanuts, she isn't a singer, but I think her acting was fine Women back then were expected to be simple, so to be cast as Belle; all anyone needed was the ability to read... and you could fit quiiiite a few actresses into the literate category.Β
Her being cast as Belle was perfect and I'll tell you why; She was already a role model for young girls, and she is also a strong female rights activist and advocate. So the fact that she is already standing up against big-bad-men in the real world proves to me that she suits the role. I could truly think of no better person. I think that everything she is and believes in is a perfect match.Β
Anyway, that's just my two cents.Β  Β I encourage everyone to make their own opinion about the film.Β

Yeah I thought you might have a very different opinion on Emma I agree that outside the film she is an amazing person and she has become a huge role model for girls. As a symbol, she was perfect for the role. I just personally thought she had less of an impact acting this particular role, though I'm sure she is an amazing person outside of the role.
Either way, it was a great experience. It still immersed me amazingly well. I appreciate you checking it out with me
