Description I don't want to hop onto the bandwagon, but this chara is simply awesome. I absolutely adore his quirks!! However, I never actually 'witnessed' them in all of its glory, since I've never even read/watched Death Note! I'd really like to get into it just to see L, but...well, I sorta figured out his outcome...and yeah.... [/EDIT/ I did end up reading the Death Note manga..and I...don't want to spoil anything so I shall speak no more!]

I created a 'standard' pattern for this plushie; I'm going to use this same pattern for most (if not all) of the anime plushies I intend on selling at AN2008. I have a price in mind, but I'd like to hear your opinion! How much do you think this L plushie is worth??

He was quite pleasant to make because he's really simple. The only 'intricate' part was the hair...but after Hermione, it really wasn't bad at all! So all in all, L was a short and sweet project.

He's adorable! Yeah I love this character but I never watched/read Death Note either and I heard about his outcome as well so I have no interest in getting into it lol. I think the live action movies are good though and he is cute ^_^

I really love all your work! Especially the Grimmjow! The one I found in a store didn't look anything like him. I wish I could make them that well. I attempted an Agito one and his head didn't even look like a head...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pheleon In reply to NikiitaIesada [2008-09-09 14:48:39 +0000 UTC]

I have yet to see the live action films... but I'm not a DN fan at all, so I don't think I'll ever watch it.

I didn't even know they have manufactured Grimmys! I've seen an ulquiorra one before, and it was really off...

Everyone has to start somewhere! If it looks wonky, keep on trying!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

NikiitaIesada In reply to pheleon [2008-09-10 02:44:32 +0000 UTC]

yeah I can't get into dn. The only character worth watching it for is L and well... Yeah...anywho... *tear*

I didn't know they made Grimmi ones either til yesterday and it's really hideous. I have an ulquiorra plush and it's not exactly him but I think it's adorable. He is featured in one of my deviations ^_^ (I had added my own 4 to his chest lol) but it's a piece of crap! Already his hair is falling off as well as his mask. I have to sew/glue it back together *scowls*. My L plush is holding a cup ^_^

I get frustrated... I do with my drawings too. My mind works faster than my hand and I get irritated. Did you say you were going to a con?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pheleon In reply to NikiitaIesada [2008-09-10 13:28:11 +0000 UTC]

I hope my plushies aren't falling apart! (cuz the ones I keep aren't handled very much, so I don't know how durable they really are.) But I guess the manufactured ones are pretty inexpensive, so you pay for what you get!

I've only ever been to one con, and that was Anime North this past year (I was in the Artist alley, selling my kids!). I'll probably go again next year, and try to do it again...but the AA sold out in 30 seconds, so I might not be able to.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

NikiitaIesada In reply to pheleon [2008-09-12 01:57:43 +0000 UTC]

Aww well at least they look really good. I think my L is a lot more durable and he has wire in his legs so he sits like L lol. And L was only $10 but the crappy Ulqiorra was $20... I still love it though. I drag him everywhere like a little kid so thats probably why its not holding up so well. Luckily I have about 5 sewing machines available to me.

Ahh that's right your from Canada. I just noticed you mentioned something about a con. I thought maybe I can go snag a Grimmi plush lol
How long does it take you to make each doll?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pheleon In reply to NikiitaIesada [2008-09-14 15:22:14 +0000 UTC]

Yup, that must be why he's breaking apart! But 5 sewing machines? Geez, I wish I had a variety!

Well, if you come to Anime North next year, I might get a table! I was also thinking of going to Otakon... but I'm not sure because I don't know what the situation is with permits in the states. (if it's too complicated, it ain't worth it)

It really depends on the complexity and size. An 11" plush takes minimum 6 hours... As prep for the con last year, I made 25 plushies in a month...so that was about a plushie a day.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

NikiitaIesada In reply to pheleon [2008-09-14 16:46:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I work for my uncle at Brothers' Lettering (a shop he and my dad started, they do embroidery and lettering on jerseys) so in the shop are 3 machines, plus embroidery machines, and one in my house so my mom can work from home, and I own one.

I don't know that I can make it to the Anime North as much as I would love to, but I really want to go to the Otakon! I love Baltimore! My mother grew up there.

It would probably take me about 5 days to make one then haha I just did the lettering on a hoodie (which I put on my page Yay Grimmi!!) and that took me about 3 hours, cutting it all out then sewing it. It was the first time I had done that myself. Are the eyes painted on?

...I'm really chatty today lol

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pheleon In reply to NikiitaIesada [2008-09-14 23:01:00 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's such a great resource! I only have one machine that is a million years old! You should make plushies! That grimm hoody looks pretty nifty though; good job.

I've never been to Baltimore... Heard it's nice, so that's an added incentive to go to Otakon.

And yes, all of my plushies have hand-painted eyes... mainly cuz I don't know how an iron-on transfer works... (or rather, I never bothered to try!)

Being chatty is good.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

NikiitaIesada In reply to pheleon [2008-09-16 16:08:42 +0000 UTC]

If it still runs then it doesn't really matter. Most of the machines at work are ancient. The one I use most is probably the oldest and its my favorite. The one I actually own is new but I don't like the way it sews. The stitches are weird. And thank you! I wish it could be more detailed but I don't have the skills or the technology for it

Yeah it is. If you like cities its not as nice as say... New York City *cough* lol but I like it. Mostly for sentimental reasons. And in the Inner Harbor there is an adorable little shop called Crystal Cove that my favorite necklace came from... I recently wore it out though *tear*

They look really good with hand-painted eyes. I think the iron-on-transfer would ruin it.

pheleon In reply to NikiitaIesada [2008-09-20 16:06:24 +0000 UTC]

Ughh, I really hate NYC. It's too much; too busy and too much visual clutter. I only go there for the art galleries... Soooo, Baltimore sounds more apppealing.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

NikiitaIesada In reply to pheleon [2008-09-21 01:54:08 +0000 UTC]

I LOVE NYC... (I am bias though since I live here) There is so much to do, you can get anywhere easy enough, and everything is always open! That was something I hated about Baltimore, everything was closed by 6-7. I needed a drug store and they were all closed. But I guess I'm just spoiled. I understand what you mean though. My best friend and I like to walk around and certain areas are really amusing because there are these really old buildings and then this new big one in the middle of them and its so out of place. But thats New York. Its always an experience even just walking around with all the weirdos. Its hilarious. ^_^

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pheleon In reply to NikiitaIesada [2008-09-21 14:48:03 +0000 UTC]

I guess it takes some getting used to. If you're a city-person, NYC is definitely the way to go! But if you like the country-side, you'd just die there, lol! (I'm not from the country; I'm from the city.. but a very calm city!)
Eeek, the weirdos freaked me out! There were too many of them! If you can laugh it off, then I guess NYC wouldn't be too bad..

I absolutely LOVE your plushie! It's amazing!
I'm just starting to make plushies myself and I wanted to ask you how did you make his hair and what fabric did you use? Is there a technique to do it or you just model it as you go?

Sorry if this is not the place to ask this, I'm new around here

Again your L is awesome!!

(sorry about my english too )

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pheleon In reply to Coldestblood [2008-01-17 23:29:59 +0000 UTC]

Thx! I used felt for his hair. I build up the hair by eye, so there isn't much of a technique per se. However, I do have a bunch of tips, and I'm probably going to make a tutorial/a guide to hair-making, so stay tuned.

This is the place to ask questions. And your english is fine. Have fun on DA!

Oh wow, he's awesome! The hair is so perfect--I love how dimensional it looks! I'd probably sell him for at least $30. It looks like a LOT of time went into that hair! You did a nice job on the eyes and the feet are really cute too! x3

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

ichigo-pan43 [2007-12-28 11:04:34 +0000 UTC]

aah, he looks great!!! as far as pricing goes-- I'm really sorry-- I have no idea D: I always have problems setting prices for my premade stuff, too >_<;; If I like something I made and wouldn't mind keeping it, I'll tend to price it higher than something that I don't want as much (like if it's a character I'm not so fond of-- ) even if the one that I like more didn't take as long to make or isn't as detailed-- D:

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pheleon In reply to ichigo-pan43 [2007-12-28 16:32:23 +0000 UTC]

lol. I think we all have that problem! There are some plushies that are simply priceless. I'm starting to get fond of my L plushie, and I'm considering keeping him... I think I should lock him up in a drawer or something, so that I'm not subject to his cuteness.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

A-chan--Creations [2007-12-28 06:19:12 +0000 UTC]

I have to say, this is quite amazing. You nailed down every detail quite remarkably. I especially love the hair and clothing.

From what I can see, you should probably stuff the head, hands, and feet more. They seem a little distorted.

As for pricing, that is really up to you as an artist. You have to take into consideration all of the time and labor that was put into making it, as well as the cost of supplies. I see way too many artists underselling themselves.

Good luck with your sales at the convention.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pheleon In reply to A-chan--Creations [2007-12-28 16:44:30 +0000 UTC]

thx for the advice, but if I stuffed the head more, he would seriously be out of proportion (I should maybe alter my pattern; he's the mock test for the pattern I made afterall!) As for the hands, they were stuffed w/ beans, so they're naturally going to be a bit froopy. As were the feet, but I should have stuck to batting because it made the toe-making very difficult.

I'll try not to undersell myself! thx again.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

A-chan--Creations In reply to pheleon [2007-12-28 18:13:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh, ok. That explains a lot then. I wasn't sure if you used fiberfill or bean pellets.

I have found that if you stuff the feet very tightly, the toes will come out better. About the only real downside that I have found with this is that the thread tends to break a lot while you're sculpting the toes. XD

lachrymosity [2007-12-27 23:31:21 +0000 UTC]

He looks amazing! I love the way you did his hair (the most accurate out of all the L plushies I have seen to date ), and his expression is to die for! I am not much of a fan of the anime/manga, but I love L's character too.

Your 'standard' plushie pattern looks good. It took me a month or two to modify one I like and I'm still working on a different one.

You have a very cute L on your hands! His expression is spot on and his hair is fantastic!! Great job!!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pheleon In reply to SeltsamPlush [2007-12-28 16:47:34 +0000 UTC]

I'm probably going to modify the pattern as well. I'm planning on making a shitload (pardon my language) of plushies for the con, so they're bound to have variations. E.g. I don't think Sephiroth should have the same pattern as Misa; lol!!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SeltsamPlush In reply to pheleon [2007-12-29 00:55:18 +0000 UTC]

So true! Modifying is hard, but satifying work. I understand why people are so reluctant to put free patterns on the internet.

Good luck with you butt load of plushies!!
