Description
BLESS! Do you know when I started on this drawing? 3 months ago! Here is the official full lineup of all my character redesigns for my Phantom Tollbooth Portfolio project that I've been spending all my time on!
I've been working on this project since the summer so you better believe I have a lot to say about these designs!
(From left to right)
The Whether Man: A silly nonsensical man in an oversized coat that stays in the land of Expectations contemplating whether or not things will happen. I am SO familiar with this man conceptually. Far too often I'm caught dreaming about things rather than making them a reality. With his design I decided to play with their weather pun and make his beard and coat made of clouds, his nose a sun and his coat the sky.
Milo:
The main character! He's jaded about life and discovers how wonderful the world is and how much he has left to learn!
He strikes me as a real introverted, thinker and daydreamer type of character- so I drew him in a nice cozy sweater and gave him a balloon-like body shape. His sweater stripes are SO useful for drawing attention in compositions.
Tock:
The dog that ticks instead of tocks and is always there sternly reminding you that you're wasting your time.
He's a sturdy companion, so I made sure his design was grounded. It actually took me a while to decide what species of dog to make him- but I settled on a French Bulldog.
Humbug:
I LOVE HUMBUG. He's stupid, cowardly and cocky. I really struggled to make his brown beetle color scheme look nice but I think I found it eventually. The little mustache and the bent antennae are my favorite details on him.
The Princesses of Rhyme and Reason:
The book describes them as caucasian and blonde with white dresses- but how boring is that?
I gave them more of a hispanic/indian skin tone and some color preferences. They're twins but they have very distinct personalities.
Also yes- RAINBOWS. Always rainbows.
The Mathemagician:
THE RAD MATH GRANDPA! Kudos to my highschool algebra teacher who inspired him. He made math fun- even if I really sucked at it.
His cloak is inspired by those paper cups from the 90s.
King Azaz: The design I struggled with the most. I still really hope the book mustache reads. His design ended up being one of my favorites though!
Expect more Phantom Tollbooth very soon!
Has anyone else read it as a kid? What do you think? c:

a Falstaffian appearance fits the Humbug nicely

I sketched them all out but due to time restraints- I can't polish the designs of all the characters.

Oh man this was my favorite book as a kid! I love the designs, it's so nice to see all of them brought to life like this and your work captures their characters very nicely!
