Well its been about a year now since I started drawing again and one of my first drawings was of a raven (currently used as my avatar
) So felt it was time to have another go, decided to add a barrow burial mound in the background covered in snow as its chilly at the moment.The scene looked pretty bleak to me so added a dash of colour from a holly tree just poking into the picture and it gives things a more festive feel.
I used a slightly larger than A4 Bristol smooth board a 0.5 mechanical and 2b/4b pencils for the drawing plus gimp to add snow, oh yes and picasa to bump the contrast a bit after scanning.
I'd like to wish a very merry Christmas/Yuletide to all viewers, watchers and fine upstanding deviantart members.

This is a really good work of art right here. I have loved ravens ever since i read "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. I like the scenary, it really compliments to raven itself. I noticed that there is a little pile of snow on its beak there, I especially like that because it gives it realism, and kinda lets the viewer know that he has been there kinda relaxing for a while. And another thing that i like is the berries in the lower right corner, it gives the picture a little color and makes the picture very interesting and unique. On the whole it is a very good picture, and good job!

This is a lovely piece. The biggest thing that both my husband and I noticed was that the foot looked wrong. Upon further examination we noticed that it appeared to just be "floating" there and looking even closer we saw that the branch is actually appropriately thick to fit the foot and make sense, just that it is covered with snow. I think having a hint of a shadow where that foot meets the snow will go a long way towards making them connect and for it to appear as though it belongs. I love your touch of color with the holly berries and your patience with the proper execution of the feathers is to be commended. The piece has a lovely sense of depth and perspective overall.

Hi Philip. I have read the cririques here and agree with mostly everything. The bird is so well done/feathers are awesome and I love the bit of snow on his beak. My only problem is the background.............I think maybe you did not spend as much time on this? Without the little dwelling this could have been a lot better.

Well I've taken on board what you have said and made some corrections,looking at the feet felt I they were too close together (just don't see things sometimes till its too late Doh!) I've added more shadow too. Gave me a bit of a headache but feel happier now

Thank you very much for taking the time to critique my drawing, yes I did draw the feet fully at first then when I added snow to the branch started to wonder whether they should be partly hidden by snow. I think you are right and the feet should be darkened to remove any confusion.
